Well preserved remnants of important New Zealand history. Not far out of Greymouth and well worth a visit. Put aside an hour to wander around this well-signed heritage area. Easy walk, lots of information about a once thriving mining settlement. Plenty to see. Sad that a monument to NZ’s worst mining disaster in 1896 has to reference other losses of miners lives, as recent as Pike River in 2010.

One can endlessly watch as the waves break on the huge black rocks underneath and around the lookout point. Even though the viewing platform is quite high above the sea the roar of the sea is deafening and in between you even get the spray from the waves as they crash endlessly against the breakwater. The glorious sunset over the Tasman Sea was a sight to see from here.

Shantytown is a leading New Zealand culture and heritage attraction. Made up of over 30 historic buildings it is a faithfully recreated 19th century pioneer town, inspired by the West Coast gold rushes of the 1860s. Highlights include riding the heritage train, gold panning, the Beehive store with its range of traditional confectionery and the opportunity to have an old time photo portrait taken as a memento of your visit.
Excellent little tourist attraction. This place is really well set up, maintained and gives a real insight into the years of the gold rush and logging and how these people lived. We would have stayed another few hours if we had the time as it is so interesting. A must see tourist spot if you are in this area.
