The lazar house or leprosarium was a place to quarantine people with leprosy (Hansen's disease) in the middle age. It was used for this purpose until the 17th century. It's the only one of it's kind in Switzerland still in it's fundamental form. The leprosarium in Burgdorf was first mentioned in 1316.

This late gothic pillar basilica is the largest religious building in the city of Burgdorf. It was build from 1471 - 1490 by Niklaus Birnenvogt who was also master builder at the minster of Berne.
