Burgdorfer Altstadt

Stadtkirche Burgdorf

The church of Burgdorf is a Swiss Reformed cathedral, in the old city of Burgdorf, Switzerland. Built by Niklaus Birnenvogt in the late Gothic style, its construction started in 1471 and was completed in 1490.

The lazar house or leprosarium was a place to quarantine people with leprosy (Hansen's disease) in the middle age. It was used for this purpose until the 17th century. It's the only one of it's kind in Switzerland still in it's fundamental form. The leprosarium in Burgdorf was first mentioned in 1316.

Bartholomaeus-Kapelle

The chapel right next to the quarantine house was built with sand stone in 1446 by Heinrich Fritag. It is one of the few field chapels that survived the reformation and is nowdays still used for services.

Reformierte Kirche Burgdorf

This late gothic pillar basilica is the largest religious building in the city of Burgdorf. It was build from 1471 - 1490 by Niklaus Birnenvogt who was also master builder at the minster of Berne. The tower is 72 meters high and the rood screen, which was built in 1512 by Heinrich Kummer is know to be the most valuable one in switzerland.
