Remains Mulberry Harbour

Reviewed By nlansdell - Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Seeing the Mulberry harbour first hand really brings it to life and gives a scale to the huge endeavours and ingenuity of the operation to supply and reinforce the Normandy landings using a portable man made harbour. My tip is to watch one of the videos on YouTube about this (rather then the museum) and then visit the beach when the tide is out (ideally in the evening if tide is out then and it is light) to see the harbour first hand. For a panoramic view visit the car park for the 360 museum either by walking up the hill from the town or by visiting in the evening when there are no parking fees.

Les Falaises d'Arromanches

Reviewed By nnmercman - Camberley, United Kingdom

Parking in Arromanches can be problematic and so here there’s plenty of space for 3euros a day. Great views across the town and remains of the Mulberry harbour from the viewing platform and if reasonably fit then it’s only 300metres down the steep descent (and ascent!!) into Arromanches. The 360deg cinema is also here but didn’t visit as to be honest after two days I was “film and museum’d out”. Have to say that in my opinion the town is a complete tourist trap and often full of bored and noisy school parties but there’s plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a good lunch and drink.

Memorial Royal Engineers

Reviewed By nnmercman - Camberley, United Kingdom

My son in law was a Sapper and it’s easy to forget just how much the success of the landings depended on the Royal Engineers getting the temporary harbours in place, completing bridging work, track laying, carrying out bomb disposal work and generally supporting the invasion before, during and afterwards. 87,000 RE personnel had landed on mainland Europe before the end of 1944 and over 6,000 officers and men had been killed between D Day and end of the war. The memorial is prominently situated on the hill above Arromanches and is a fitting tribute.
