The movie 'Lion King' was released in 1994. It garnered 2 academy awards and led to the broadway adaption later. But do you know who was the first 'Lion King' of the world - It is the 'Lord Narasimha' who is worshipped by the Hindus in India. Lord Narasimha, as the name implies, is a combination of 'Nara' and 'Simha' which means Man and Lion respectively. He is the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This Lakshmi Narasimhar temple in Poovarasankuppam was built by the ruler Narasimha Pallavar 1 in the 7th Century. This temple is also known as South Ahobilam. Other things that you might know by now - 1) 3 temples in a straight line. (Singirikudi - Poovarasankuppam - Parikkal) Imagine this sort of geospatial positioning being achieved 1000+ years ago... Truly Amazing ancient Indians. 2) Goddess Lakshmi sitting on the lap of the Lord with one eye looking towards the devotees and the other looking at the Lord. Hence, the name Lakshmi Narasimhar 3) All of the Narasimhar temples have a sacred tradition of offering free food for the devotees (Anna Dhanam). However, there were no receipts given to us, though the person noted down the name and address. I wish we had more options to donate money through Bhim UPI, Gpay, PayTM, PayPal etc in this digital age. TNHRCE - PLEASE PLEASE Wake up 4) Lord Venugopal Swamy Sannathi in the right side of the temple along with Andal Sannithi and Amirthavalli Sannithi's 5) This temple is an example of Men and Women being treated equally in India 1400 years ago. I really liked the marketing of the person who was selling flowers in front of the temple. Hats off to our unsung heroes. He very well knew that we were on our way to the next temple stop - Parikkal (remember we had the blessings of Singirikudi Narasimhar by then). He asked us to buy flowers there in Poovarasankuppam itself as the flowers would not be available in Parikkal by the time we reach there. We got a lovely wonderful Thazambu garland for the Parikkal Lord Narasimha. Please refer to the picture attached for more details of the place and the other Narasimha temples in Tamil Nadu. Jai Sri Narasimha

Inside MatriMandir tours are every morning at 8:30 am except Sunday. To get tickets to go inside, you need to pick up the free pass in person, only between 10-11 am and 2-3 pm and they will be for the next available day. Ask at the Visitor's Center the location (it is upstairs and not clearly marked). We went on Wednesday afternoon and the first available date was Friday. However, it rained on Friday so MatriMandir was closed! Luckily we could go on Saturday as they honored our pass. It was an amazing experience to go inside! Highly recommended. The outside viewing is available daily and the vibration is very peaceful, even if there are crowds of people making noise all around.

"Kaal Maram" in the local language translates to Stone Trees, are a geological wonder. The park has within its premises fossilised trees hard as rocks, explaining why the locals call them 'kaal maram'. In essence, these are the petrified wood of trees that existed in the Miocene era, 20 million years ago! It is the result of a trees or tree-like plants having completely transitioned to stone by the process of permineralization. All the organic materials have been replaced with minerals, while retaining the original structure of the stem tissue. The trees belong to several rare species of conifers and palms. The trees are believed to have been transported by rivers to their present sites of deposition in inland seas. What’s even more interesting is that the park also has ancient burial sites. Just a few kilometers away from Pondicherry, the Fossil Park offers a quick getaway. Those who are interested to visit have the option of taking a private tour, along with a local resource person.
This fossil park is located in Thiruvakkarai famous for vakira kaliamman temple.the tree stones are said to be trillion of years old . The history is written in a board st the enterance. There are no fees

This is surely a Must visit place while in Pondicherry. The place in bit far from main Pondicherry town and you have to hire a bike or taxi to visit this place. The area is very peaceful and actually very big. You need atleast 3-4 hours to see this place. The place is very well managed by the trust. It’s peaceful and full of natural surroundings. The food is also there. Overall a must see place.
