The 606

Reviewed By 866TaylorB - Chicago, United States

The Bloomingdale Trail is a 2.7-mile elevated rail trail running east-west on the northwest side of Chicago. In 2015, it was converted into an elevated greenway, which forms the backbone of the linear park and trail network called The 606 that passes through the Chicago neighborhoods of Logan Square, Humboldt Park and West Town. At 2.7 miles, the Bloomingdale Trail is the longest greenway project of a former elevated rail line in the United States and the second longest in the world. So why is it called The 606? Because the system's numeric name is a homage to the city's Zip codes, the prefix for nearly all of which is 606. Used by walkers, joggers, runners and bikers, the trail runs from Ashland Avenue all the way west to North Ridgeway Avenue. It follows along West Bloomingdale Avenue, hence the name Bloomingdale Trail. On a clear day, pedestrians on the trail get a spectacular view of Chicago's skyline.

Empire Builder

Reviewed By zeppyblimp - Silver Spring, United States

The ride from Seattle to Chicago on Amtrak’s Empire Builder is a great experience. 1st afternoon: the train rolls along Puget Sound, then up Skykomish River into the Cascades. 2nd day: sunrise along Kootenai River, many hours in the Rockies near Glacier National Park, and the rest of the day crossing the world’s breadbasket – the wheat fields of Montana and North Dakota. 3rd day: many miles along the Mississippi, then across Wisconsin, a State that doesn’t need great mountains to be beautiful. We rode in a sleeping car. Highly recommended; arrived Chicago completely refreshed. If you can reserve many months in advance and can also be flexible about the specific date, you may be able to get an excellent deal. Keep in mind: the price includes the 6 meals in the dining car. We were delighted by the effectiveness and cheerfulness of our sleeping car attendant Andy and dining car personnel Jamie, Noelani, and Jamison. Despite their long hours and hard work, they treated each customer as if they were her/his one special guest. The continental breakfast, vege-burger for lunch, and vegan rigatoni for supper were excellent. It is thoughtful of Amtrak to have vegan or vegetarian options right there on the menu, not requiring any special order.
