Vancouver was founded as “Gastown” by an Englishman with a penchant for beer and storytelling. Today Gastown is a historic section of the Canadian metropolis, and the lively pubs still reflect the area’s former status as a sort of community drinking center. The city’s forests, grand parks, and impressive suspension bridge beckon travelers to explore them, as do the city’s shops and museums. Relive the glory of the 2010 Winter Games with visits to Olympic venues and the marvelous Olympic Cauldron.

Whether you want to learn how to row, kayak, sail or swim, this beach is the place. Very family focused in the summer, it's a great beach for a picnic, or to practice open water swimming (short distance). There is also a great place to eat, above the Sailing Club. While it used to be some sort of an airport or base, there is a longer indigenous history- though of what sort exactly I am not sure. Landscaped beautifully for walking, and for music festivals (of which I know there have been two which usually happen annually)- this has got to be one of the best, small beaches in the city.

This expansive beach offers fantastic picnicking opportunities, swimming, beach volleyball, or simply a panoramic view of Vancouver and the mountains. Spanish Banks tends to be a quieter beach which makes it very family-friendly.
My favourite place to watch the sunset in Vancouver is at the far west side of Spanish Banks by the dog park. Bring a picnic dinner and a blanket, and settle in to watch the spectacular summer sunsets, enjoy the sound of water lapping in on the beach, and the joyous playfulness of the dogs running and playing off-leash. The air smells spicy with the fragrance of trees and salt water. A really special spot in the midst of urban life.

Another amazing beach-like location in Vancouver. As you know, the beaches here are not as sandy and gorgeous as the Caribbean, but the all have their charm. This one is a bit off the downtown core, and close to the university. It has its famous logs by the sand and plenty of outdoor activities.
