Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye [ˈtyɾcije]), officially the Republic of Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye Cumhuriyeti [ˈtyɾcije d͡ʒumˈhuɾijeti] ( listen)), is a transcontinental country in Eurasia, mainly in Anatolia in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries with Greece and Bulgaria to the northwest; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, the Azerbaijan and Iran to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the south. The country is encircled by seas on three sides with the Aegean Sea to the west, the Black Sea to the north, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles, which together form the Turkish Straits, divide Thrace and Anatolia and separate Europe and Asia. Ankara is the capital while Istanbul is the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre, classified as a leading global city.

Really cheap way of travelling around Istanbul. The underground runs bang on time and is ridiculously cheap. You can get the Istanbul card at most locations near to any stop, get an Istanbul travel card and simply top up.

The trip only took a minute or so (it's driverless) but saves a long steep walk. The cost is only a few Turkish Lira (we used an Istanbul travel card) and takes you straight to the tram stop at Kabata where it travels to the Sultanhamet area to visit Topkapi, Blue Mosque etc. Most convenient.

Travelling from Kars to Ankara, we departed at 10.30pm, the beginning of our 30 hour journey, in the Tourist tour (All sleeper cabins) Cabins are comfortable and clean. Beds comfortable with crisp sheets. Dining cart serves basic food; tea,hot drinks, snacks, toasted sandwiches etc. Don't be fooled into booking a table for dinner, you will be disappointed. Train stops at Divrigli for 2 hours, the tour to the Ulu mosque is a must, but is all in Turkish. Another stop for 3 hours in Sivas, don't go sleep like we did and miss it. This trip should be mandatory for those who about to get married. If your relationship can survive 30 hours in a confined space, then there will be hope for you marriage. If you have doubts on the trip, throw on the towel and move on. It is a deal breaker. The are two types of toilets on board, tradition and European, located at either end of the carriage.

We did our own Bosphorus cruise by getting the regular ferry across to Karakoy. In our case the was the point and at 5TL each way was a real bargain. We wandered around Karakoy people watching which was very pleasant. We used the ferry from the nearest quay to Galatea bridge on the Golden Horn and the ticket machines are easily converted to English. All simplicity and and an intercontinental voyage ticked off!
