One of Japan's most-visited hot springs resorts, the hilly city of Beppu is often blanketed in steam, providing a clue to its enduring appeal. It's unabashedly touristic, but sinking into a steaming thermal pool offers an appealing way to escape the crowds.

Clean and helpful services from front desk. Onsen is open overnight for guest. Location is very convenient, right next to Kitahama bus terminal ( bus terminal from Fukuoka Airport if you land there). Also famous local restaurant visit by tourists nearby the guesthouse.

Stayed for a night not at the dormitory but a private Japanese style room. Room was very spacious and the only down point was that it was mid winter in January but the room was still rather cold even with the heater. The heater was only in the main room and the toilet/shower area was freaking cold. They do not have a bath tub, but a shower and toilet in the same space with only a shower curtain separating the shower stand and the other part of the toilet. Whole area can get very wet after a shower.. Parking isnt free, and you have to book in advance. There is a living room and onsen on the first floor but it was too cold and i was too lazy as our room was on the 3rd floor. Guy at reception was very friendly and helpful. Location is a plus, just a few minutes walk from the station and if you need food, there are a few eateries around that open late. They also have rental bicycles.

In Bloom Beppu is a beautiful home which has had a great amount of love dedicated to it. So many tasteful and practical aspects to the property. Excellent directions and instructions for entry provided.

23-24 June, 2018. Our memorable trip to Beppu would not be complete if we did not describe our lovely experience in Guest House Danran. We had booked the place on booking.com: a place that was a 5-minute walk from the Beppu Station (which would be a pivotal point in our going around, with respect to both trains and buses). The check-in time is 04:00pm-08:00pm. It was around 04:00pm that I got a call on my contact number, politely enquiring as to when we would check-in. We were requested to come in before the check-in time closed. We made it well in time. The property is extremely neat and clean, and the staff, courteous and helpful. We were assigned room 205 on the second floor: a Japanese-style large room with tatami mats, and three roll-on beds (3-piece foldable pads, a mattress, bed-sheets, blankets, blanket covers, and pillows: 3 sets of each). There were windows along one-and-a-half sides of the room (and that was very nice!), and a large translucent sliding door as an entrance to the room. There was a large TV set on the room, which we did not patronise. A bookshelf has a large selection of Japanese Manga comics, and a large number of books. The men's washroom was on the first and second floors, and ladies' room was on the third. The large common area on the first floor features a kitchen with a sink, cooking stoves, kettles, pots and pans, condiments, and complementary tea of various types, and coffee of two types. We were also offered complementary admission to three onsens (Japanese-style baths), and a sand bath onsen as well, all a short walk from the place. There is a large number of restaurants in the vicinity. The first floor features an outside sitting area (which is patronised by smokers). The entrance features a place for keeping (and taking) umbrellas, and shoes. Slippers are supposed to be used on the property. This place cost us JPY 8400 for the one night we were there. And yes, there was free WiFi. Overall, a wonderful experience.

This guesthouse has everything you need on a budget trip - really comfortable rooms (both Japanese-style with tatami mats and Western-style) with aircon + TV, showers, laundry facilities, kitchen facilities and free coffee, tea + snacks. The location is superb - immediately next to Oita Bus stop for going to Takasakiyama monkey park, Royal Host family restaurant does a good breakfast, short walk to JR Beppu station, the beach, lots of restaurants, and the staff are sooo nice - they really did everything they could to help me have the best trip! A big thumbs-up, and I look forward to staying there again next time I'm in Beppu!

Our experience was very poor at this hostel. Staff were pleasant enough but chaotic and disorganised. Of the facilities promised, no cafe/bar available, vending machines are outside on the street, “lounge” is a landing with two armchairs, rooms are cramped and too small for 6 people with bags, the hostel feels hastily unfinished, probably to get ready for the rugby World Cup games- so they could overcharge 2x the normal price. More spent on fancy decor, key locks and light fittings than basic facilities. No shower so use the local onsens, which we knew about but still feels overpriced for this. Only one toilet as the other kept blocking. Private parties in the bar so external noise and food smells seeping in to the room until late. Location is good, that’s about the best thing going for it!
