The Glendalough Hotel

At the Glendalough Hotel in County Wicklow, we like to let the scenery do the talking, our team are here to offer a warm welcome and simple home comforts. The sites in Glendalough are at the heart of Ireland's Ancient East with the 6th-century gateway to the Monastic site steps away from the hotel. The colours and sounds of the valley of Glendalough change with every season and the Glendalough Hotel is well placed for you to enjoy all that this valley has to offer. The magical sounds and breathtaking scenes will transport you back to a quieter time of meditation and a closeness to nature.

One night stay - very disappointing. Avoid.

Such a disappointment! This hotel was our last stop on a three week 'road trip', touring Ireland. The hotel's location is superb, right in the centre of the Glendalough valley in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. We had booked a 'superior double king room', which supposedly had been recently renovated. The bed was comfortable and the bedding was clean, but the carpet was dirty - it evidently had not been vacuumed prior to our visit. The room smelt 'musty'. We complained about this to reception, and got an unhelpful shrug of the shoulders in response The bathroom was small, and the towel rail under the bathroom basin fell off. Our room overlooked a field at the back of the hotel, but also overlooked a busy tourist pathway. Our booking was inclusive of dinner at the hotel. We were told that we could not eat in the restaurant, which appeared to be closed, and that dinner would be served in the bar/bistro, which was relatively dark and noisy. The dinner menu was very limited, but the food quality was adequate. Service was very poor and disorganised - no evidence of any management presence or intervention. Breakfast was served in the restaurant, which had miraculously re-opened! Breakfast was appalling - by far the worst breakfast we experienced in the whole of our Ireland holiday. No menu provided. A small quantity of sweetened tinned fruit, no yoghurts(!), no fresh fruit, a very limited choice of cereals and no grains/nuts, and 'hot' food which was at best lukewarm. Insufficient staff, and no attempt to assist guests. The staff appeared unhappy and unmotivated - again no evidence of any management presence or intervention. The owner/manager of this hotel should hang their head in shame. It is a very poor advertisement for Irish hospitality. Fortunately we had previously experienced superb hospitality throughout the rest of our tour, so we are willing to write this one off as the exception. Our advice to anyone considering staying here - avoid it if you can.

Glendalough International Youth Hostel

Poor

Reviewed By Michael O

Myself and my son stayed here as the first night of a two day hiking trip. We got a private toom which was very basic. We were given linen and had to make out own beds which were quiet hard and uncomfortable. We had a en suite bathroom but no soap. We were both woken at 6.15 by the pipes banging as the water started to heat for the day. I would excuse these issues on the basis of it being a hostel but considering how much we were charged I would say its just bad value for money. The following night we stayed at a B&B in glenmalure which was excellent in terms of value for money and comfort. This highlighted how poor the hostels offerings were. Wouldn't stay again.

We stayed at Carrnel's B and B on the last night of our 10 day self-drive holiday around the Republic of Ireland and found it to be of average standard.. We had booked it based on the excellent 5 star reviews we had read on this website. We were disappointed with what we got for our money compared with previous places we had stayed in Ireland. Perhaps the Glendalough area commands higher prices than other areas?
