Following a fairly hairy drive from northern Galicia - narrow windy roads mainly, we had a WOW moment reaction on seeing the monastery below the level of the road. Spectacularly refurbished and although a hotel (the word HOSTEL off-putting for native english speakers) the peace and spirituality of the former monastery could still be experienced. Arriving on a feast day however the hotel was full of day trippers and was quite noisy and not what we expected. It was explained to us that the hotel is a tourist destination simply to view the monastery etc, there is nowhere else in the area to visit, so this is it! We stayed 3 nights which was too long - apart from some nice walks nothing else of interest nearby except the boat trip along River Sil which was amazing. We were very fortunate that in October the weather was excellent (about 23-24 degrees each day) although chilly at night and early morning. Our bedroom (a standard) was reasonable size with lovely view over main cloister. The bathroom however has seen better days and the safe was not working. We had to ask for bath area to be properly cleaned, the soap tray was also falling off the wall and the safe door had to be replaced. Although these matters were dealt with by housekeeping, no one ever apologised or commented. The building in general was spotlessly clean and some wonderful rooms to sit in and admire the view (which we found ourselves but weren't pointed out to us on arrival). A few odd choices in design. The 'tour' which is available to those visiting the site goes through the only bar/cafeteria area in the hotel. So as we sat to have a snack on arrival there was a constant flow of people walking past the tables (all wearing masks thankfully) out the exit door only to return 5 minutes later or so walking back through again. This room really felt like a café in a tourist attraction rather than the bar area of a 4 star hotel. When 'dressed up' for breakfast it was much nicer and welcoming. Apart from a small terrace on the second floor, there is nowhere to sit outside and enjoy a coffee or drink during the day which is very strange given location and weather. At dinner there is an option to sit on the terrace outside the main dining room. However, it was quite cold at that stage of the evening and there is no heater or lighting to enhance the view. Strange! Next the staff, in general all friendly and very professional especially Daniel . The one exception was the waiter who greeted us in the dining room that evening. Wearing an ill-fitting, well worn suit he barely spoke to us - I felt he didn't have sufficient English to understand what we were asking. The younger waiter who served us our food was excellent. The food was just passable, lukewarm rather than hot and expensive for this part of the country. The menu was limited and so we decided to eat nearby (a great find Meson San Roque) a 10 minute walk down hill from the Parador. Breakfast buffet worked well and good selection of food and drinks available at €18 per person. C-19 protocols worked well here, with a 50 minute 'slot' leaving time to clean before next group of guests. All in all a unique location, some good service, disappointing and expensive food and I suggest they rethink the layout of the 'cafeteria'

Charming small family hotel in the heart of the Ribera Sacra. Just a 15 minutes from Ourense and the Thermal area.
A small hotel that delivers good service and food. It represents excellent value for money. We chose this hotel for location to explore the Sil and Miño river areas. Our room (103) had the bonus of a large terrace which looked towards the Miño river. All the staff were excellent. Because of the terrain the access road to the hotel is fairly steep and narrow with very limited parking at the hotel itself. We parked on the road through the village above the hotel. Would choose to stay here again if visiting this area.

Very nice and lovely stay with a very good breakfast. that includes some local specialties. Walls are not very soundproof though. They have some dogs and a cat living there which made the stay for us very pleasant as they are very friendly.

Ribeira Sacra lodging. A Casa da Eira is an ancient farm house from 1920 restored in traditional style in 2001. We are at 35 minutes from Ourense and 10 minutes from the Parador de Santo Estevo. The accommodation has generous common space, a garden facing south and a balcony from which one can enjoy a view on the River Sil Canyon. We offer both, bed&breakfast as well as self-catering accommodations. A Casa da Eira is situated in Galicia, in the province of Ourense, in the midst of the historic area of “The Ribeira Sacra” with its considerable number of Romanesque monasteries. Our village, Alberguería, is located at the upper part of the River Sil Canyon and surrounded by hundred-year-old chestnut woods.Numerous activities can be undertaken in the near surroundings such as cultural trips, hill walking, canoeing, climbing, swimming in the nearby dam, mountain biking, adventure sports, boat excursions through the River Sil Canyon.
I drove to A Casa da Eira early one morning in July with the intention of hiking some of the trails that were suggested on their website. Little did I know that the page containing the descriptions of the hikes were for prospective overnight guests. Needless to say Adolfo was very surprised to see two strangers wandering into his dining room looking for information. He immediately bade us to sit while he made coffee and called for Suzanne who graciously took time out from her busy morning in between breakfast and check out time, to serve us cake and coffee. She gave us a little bit of history of the area and of the Bed and Breakfast and allowed us to keep our car parked on the property while we hiked some of the stunning trails that crisscross the property. While I cannot review the Bed and Breakfast as an overnight guest, I can attest to Suzanne and Aldolfo's hospitality and cooking. They took time out from the busiest part of the day to visit with us and served up some of the best coffee and cake we tasted during our three week tour of Spain.

A little off the beaten track, you will find this gem of a place. Family owned and run, the food is local and some even grown on the premises. Our food and wine was perfection as was the service. We were amazed at how little this meal cost bearing in mind the quality presented. If you are in the area, make time to visit the lovely people that will make your vacation one to remember
