This large house used to be owned by the Yorke family: they had the place for over 250 years. They were also magpies: nothing ever got thrown away. However, toward the end of the Yorkes’ ownership, the house was allowed to get in a dilapidated state. So much so that the National Trust didn’t want to take it on. When they saw the collection of items, though, they changed their minds. Now, Erddig is well on the way to complete resurrection. It is stuffed with the Yorkes’ collection, and the rooms have been put back to the form they would have been in at their best. A wonderful place - it is also in massive grounds with some excellent formal gardens and outbuildings. Also a restaurant, cafe, tea garden and ice cream parlour.

I must congratulate all those concerned in making the state rooms at Chirk Castle look like they had stepped out from a fairytale. Decorated to the highest standard with interest around every corner, we spent a memorable afternoon looking around at all the decorated trees and what a splendid walk up the drive from the car park. Fairy lights across the trees and Christmas Carols playing. Well worth a visit for everyone. Magical

Fabulous views and and amazing feat of engineering by Thomas Telford, enjoyed walking across the aqueduct and watching the canal activity.

Hubby wanted to walk across the aqueduct whilst in the area, parked at cafe near police station - aqueduct is literally around the corner. Not that long if you only do that part, although we did attempt to walk through the tunnel but got scared as so dark so wimped out and went back. Lovely to see and chat to the people on the walk and narrow boats.

I’ve been coming here with a group of friends for pre-Christmas drinks for a few years now. Landlord is always welcoming and provides an excellent range of beers. We let him know in advance that our group (about 15) were coming and his puts in a few snacks for us which is very much appreciated. Proper pub with a real fire. Highly recommended.

we parked at the visitor centre( note this and the toilets are only open at weekends) parking was only £1.Whilst there are many walks The one I did was walking past the visitor centre on the left then go up an ascent, at the road junction turn right. descend a bit and look for a kissing gate on the left see photo. go though this and then follow the river to a waterfall, then a little later a weir This is the fastest point then retrace you steps back to car 0ark-this is 2.8miles and takes approx. 1hour. you start above the river but do descend along river when dogs can have a drink and paddle. Highly recommend especially on hot days when the shade from the trees and the water will be welcomed by your dogs
