Suleymaniye Hamam is a traditional Turkish bath that continues to operate today. The building, commissioned by Sultan Suleyman and designed by the Turkish architect Mimar Sinan, was built in 1557. It features dramatic archways and domes and is decorated with elaborate marble inlay. It is the only hamam in Istanbul where men and women bathe together. 40 Euro per person.The entire hamam experience will last between 60-90 minutes.

As you may know, most hamams have separate times for men and women, so my wife and I were ecstatic to know that we could experience this together. This was perfect for couples. They provide a wrap for men and shorts/top for women. The male hamam workers are professional and thorough. You are wrapped in warm towels afterwards and have time to enjoy drinks. This is a must do if you stay in Istanbul!

My sister and I went to these baths today - we had been to a hammam in Morocco before so we did broadly know what to expect. This is a really great, traditional Turkish baths which was clean and well staffed. The hot room is beautiful with a massive marble slab to lie on and domed roof. You really don’t need to bring a single thing with you - they provide everything you would need along with the basic entry fee. There are clean changing facilities with lockers so your belongings are perfectly safe. Afterwards there is a lounge-type area where you can relax and buy a drink. They have big signs saying that drinks are extra so there is no confusion. From my experience, hammams are not spas. They are primarily for cleaning purposes with a bit of ladies-only socialising which is part of the charm. Do not go if you are expecting some sort of Western-style pamper day. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a real Turkish experience and would 100% visit again!
