The staff were amongst the most friendly, well-informed and relaxed we’ve met at an National Trust property. The house renovation was not the usual pristine National Trust standard we've experienced in other places, it looks as though the National Trust need to invest a lot of money into the property. However the house is interesting, the working water mill is good to see, and riverside walk through woodland was delightful. Real efforts in child-friendliness have been made. It was lovely that apples grown in the orchards were available for a voluntary contribution. It was too wet to visit the gardens but they looked promising.

Lowther Castle sits on a majestic elevated spot a few miles south of Penrith. Surrounded by acres of woodland and ancient gardens, the ruined castle is a stunning place to visit for families of all sizes and ages. An adventure playground in the woods is amazing for the younger visitor; the gardens are a feast for the imagination; the café offers food for all palates; and the shop sells a range of delightful Lowther and other goodies. Dogs on leads very welcome.
Lovely gardens, different sections, e.g rose garden (still being developed), Japanese garden etc., gorgeous views from the edge and lots of little interesting things scattered around There is a HUGE children’s play castle at the back which me and my 26 year old boyfriend enjoyed playing on so it’s for the big kids as well :P We ate at the cafe, very nice tasty food, a little bit pricey but typical for similar places. Would visit again

Even though we visited in October when the house was closed and the gardens past their best for the year, we had an amazing day at Hutton in the Forest. The location is gorgeous and the gardens, House and Dovecote beautiful. The house looked amazing from the outside so we are very much looking forward to visiting again when it is open so that we can see the inside too. So peaceful and beautifully landscaped it really is a must if you are in the area.

A must on any visit to the Lakes for us - great place to stock up on some of the harder to find varieties of plants and a fab coffee an cake stop. Would recommend to anyone (gardener or not).

A thoroughly enjoyable visit to a Georgian Mansion and its gardens. The guided tour was excellent and the stories of the lives of the three families who have occupied the Mansion, along with the all who worked there was really interesting. One most interesting room still had its 300 year old Chinese wallpaper on! The extensive gardens are beautifully laid out and we'll have to go back to see the parts we didn't see. The cafe very comfortable and has a good varied menu.

Enjoy the gardens, relax in the Kitchen Garden Cafe and visit the animals. The gardens are full of interesting features including colourful terraces and herbaceous borders, formal lawns, kitchen gardens, woodlands, meadows and ponds. There are impressive views too and you can buy some plants to take home with you. At the Kitchen Garden Cafe you can enjoy coffee, cakes, light lunches including pizzas and other hot food from the outdoor wood-fired oven. Homemade ice-creams and cordials are also on the menu. We grow and rear as much of our own produce as possible for Askham Hall Cafe and our pub and restaurant the George and Dragon in nearby Clfton. You can meet the animals too in our special animal viewing area - including rare-breed pigs, goats and shorthorn cattle and soon, free-range chickens and ducks. And children can also enjoy the outdoor play area.
We stumbled across this little gem on one of our bike rides from Keswick and have since returned a further three times! Great pizza/flatbread, cake and coffee, in fantastic surroundings, either in the barn or gardens. But what we have to mention is the fantastic customer service we received on each occasion from a young chap called Harvey. Nothing is ever too much trouble or for him and he has a smile for everyone, he is a real credit to the establishment!
A 5 acre plantsman's garden featuring a collection of mature trees and rare an unusual plants tucked away within a tranquil glade in the heart of the Lake District. There is plenty of interest throughout the year with the garden known for its collection of over 50 varieties of Salvia which provide colour until first frost. There are also extensive rockery areas which feature many choice alpines.
