The Garden House

The Garden House is a 10 acre series of garden rooms, each planted differently, for seasonal interest. Visitors love the planting styles, 16th century ruins, bright colours and far reaching views over wild flower meadows. Children can roam free and find hidden corners and explore trails and trees. It is a wonderful place for garden enthusiasts, walkers and family visits. The tea room in the main house is renowned for freshly made treats and light lunches. Plants sold onsite at our well stocked plant centre are often propagated from the garden so you will find interesting and unusual varieties that aren’t commonly available. Plus we have a delightful Old Potting Shed shop stocking crafts, books, locally made produce and gardening gifts.

A beautiful garden, surprisingly extensive with changing character as you move through the winding paths into walled garden, arboretum, woodland, wild meadow and more. Full of planting interest through the year. A wonderful place to go and get lost in.

Hill House Nursery

This is a family run plant Nursery set in nearly 6 acres, 2.5 of which are a garden originally laid out by Edward Hyams, a famous plantsman and garden writer of the 50s and 60s. The Nursery is owned & run by Matthew Hubbard and most of our stock is propagated on the premises. Some of our stock is plants that are rare and unusual or had to find. From 1 March to 30 September, there is a Tea Room serving home made soups, cakes, scones and light lunches using local produce wherever possible.

Really lovely garden nursery. The lady who works with the plants is helpful and explained to us honestly which plants would best suit our garden. Eating in their garden with some tea and cake is such a treat too. It’s also great to buy plants from somewhere that isn’t profiting from selling plastic garden ornaments and other junk that’s not good for the environment. I hope more people venture out to Hill House, it’s well worth a visit!

Bowdens

Bowdens Gardens host of two national collections: The National Collection of Hostas and The National Collection of Agapanthus, in a mature, restful garden. There are two additional gardens to visit within 400 yards of the main garden. All these gardens are covered by our unique audio tour gently explaining the background behind the business and the depth of planting and tales of hosta discoveries and mad fern professors! Bowdens sell hostas (of course), ferns and bamboos. Complimentary coffee is served all day in a wooded courtyard area alongside vintage garden books and our retro plant hunter's log cabin.

We had a spare hour after walking at Meldon Viaduct. Not much is open in lockdown so finding this nursery open was a welcome surprise. They were really welcoming and very knowledgeable about the plants. It's a real family affair but you're left to wander the gardens in peace, only disturbed by the blackbirds. I highly recommend a short visit if you like plants.
