A contemporary Art Gallery with a working pottery and painting studio by the Thames Estuary in the quaint Old Town of Leigh-on-Sea. Established in 1991 by potter Richard Baxter and artist Sheila Appleton, now joined by ceramicist Julie O'Sullivan & painter Ian E Smith. Works on sale and to commission.
I always enjoy a visit, it's an oasis of culture and calm, in our often too lively Old Town. The owners produce marvellous work, the conversation can be very entertaining and you can often see work in progress. The pottery is extremely tempting, the glazes are brilliant. The two painters works are very different, but you could easily walk away with a piece. there's a wide price range - so you could easily be tempted!

Friendly and helpful staff a very well laid out public space. A great library with plenty of space to read/study and computer screens for public access. Meeting rooms are ideal for group training and activities. WiFi access works well etc. Coffee shop next door and parking close enough. There is an outdoor cinema screen I assume used in summer months

Focal Point Gallery supports the production and presentation of new and recent contemporary art that challenges us to think and feel differently about locality, our sense of self and the importance of communities. Our wide-ranging and pioneering artistic programme is relevant to local and national audiences alike, through exploring current concerns that also resonate internationally. Based in Southend-on-Sea on the Thames Estuary, FPG’s activities take place in locations across the region with our reach extended by working collaboratively with like-minded partners. FPG commissions and presents major solo exhibitions, group and thematic shows, events and off-site projects, which develop new audiences and engage local communities.

The Beecroft Gallery is the largest public art gallery in Essex and holds Southend's historic art collection. The collection holds works by the likes of Molenaer, Ruisdael and Berchem plus 19th-century artists including Rossetti, Constable and Edward Lear. Our photography collection includes notable works by Josef Koudelka and we have a large collection of historic costume. There are works by Carel Weight, the Great Bardfield Group, and a fine bronze by Jacob Epstein. The local artist Alan Sorrell is represented by his Drawings of Nubia series depicting a visit to Egypt prior to the building of the Aswan Dam. The Thorpe Smith Collection of local landscape views contains paintings, drawings and prints from as early as 1803. Due to the size of the collection, key works are displayed on a rotational basis. The Beecroft also has a rotating programme of touring exhibitions Some of our recent exhibitions have included 'Subcultures', 'Colour' and artwork from the local community.
We visited the Beecroft Art Gallery just after Christmas, in early January 2020. We were highly impressed with the exhibitions we saw - no fewer than four excellent shows. There was an exciting exhibition by a local artist (Daniel Meikle), a varied series of paintings from the Gallery's collection exemplifying colour, a show of impressive photos taken by a local photographer with his iPhone (Footsteps by Phil Stalham) and a thought-provoking display entitled "This is what an Essex girl looks like" (work designed to challenge the stereotypical presentation of Essex girls in our culture). We felt that the range and quality of the exhibitions would give some of the prestigious galleries in London a run for their money. The Gallery staff were very friendly and helpful. In addition to all this we should not forget The Jazz Centre UK, a lively hub dedicated to all things jazz. While we were in the Gallery, there was an excellent live gig going on in the Jazz Centre on the lower floor, so that while we were looking at the art, music was wafting up rather magically from below. We came out feeling uplifted, stimulated and energised.
