Under new management since October 2010, we are a commercial vineyard producing award winning English Sparkling wine. Greyfriars was originally planted in 1989 and has been producing great grapes and wines for over 20 years. We took over in late 2010 with the aim of expanding the vineyard dramatically, producing stunning English sparkling wine and building a state of the art winery, cellar and tasting room. We are well on the way to that goal. We have planted over 30 acres of new vines, predominantly the three classical Champagne grape varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. This will enable us to create a small range of spectacular English sparkling wines reflecting the unique local soil conditions, climate and heritage of the Surrey North Downs. The Downs in southern England are blessed with similar geological and soil conditions to the Champagne region in France. At Greyfriars we have a clay/loam topsoil over several hundred feet of wonderful free draining Cretaceous chalk. The chalk was originally deposited over a hundred million years ago when this entire area was submerged under a tropical sea. The highest part of the estate offers splendid views towards the South Downs and east towards Guildford and beyond. In September 2013 we released the first wine made entirely by our own fair hands, a delicious sparkling rose, the first release of many. By the end of the decade we will be producing 100,000 bottles a year.
Had a fantastic tour and wine tasting at Greyfriars in a beautiful vineyard setting. You can tell that the team is passionate about their wines and what they do. And the wines tasted were delicious. Highly recommended!

My husband and I enjoyed an excellent vineyard tour and tasting session this morning at the Albury Organic Vineyard in the beautiful Surrey Hills - would highly recommend. NB the vineyard has it’s own car-parking separate to the main car-parking off the Shere Road. Dominic gave the tour to the group this morning, focusing on ‘biodynamics’ within organic viticulture, which we were fascinated to learn about. So many interesting facts and a fabulous view from the top of the vineyard - so lovely to be out and walking through the vines. You can even get involved and volunteer to help out with the harvest in late Sep/Oct. Afterwards we enjoyed a well organised, outdoor and under-cover wine tasting session managed by Dominic and Alex and we sampled four wines: a rose, two sparkling and a vermouth - delicious. After the tasting we were able to visit the open-air bar to buy refreshments and to buy bottles to take home - which we did! As part of our booking we had pre-purchased an ‘afternoon tea box’ which we enjoyed back at our table in the tasting area. ‘Loos for Dos’ cubicles are on-site for your comfort and the team have worked hard to deliver a ‘COVID-secure’ operation which was much appreciated, yet in no way over-shadowed the enjoyment of the event - well done all round and thank you for a lovely morning. See you again. Patricia & Philip Chappell, Crowthorne

Come and spend a couple of tranquil hours here with us at Blackdown Ridge Vineyard. We are situated overlooking the beautiful South Downs National Park. Walk with us through the vines learning about viticulture throughout the year, spend time discovering the magic that happens in the winery and then join us around the table to sample our International Award winning Still and Sparkling wines.
Couldn't recommend this highly enough. Spectacular views across West Sussex at this highly rated vineyard which is clearly a labour of love for the owner and staff. Our host, Lucinda, was incredibly knowledgeable about the entire winemaking process, from vine to glass, and made the experience fun and informative. Obviously, the highlight of the trip was the extensive tasting session of six different wines so I would advise visitors to take the train to Haslemere and then either walk (approximately one hour through glorious countryside/National Trust land) or take a taxi (approximately 15 minutes) to the vineyard.

Lovely wine tasting: chose 6 wines to try with cheese and biscuits. Really lovely and relexed. Simon was really knowledgeable and enthusiastic about wine, and his winery. Enjoyed drinks on the new decking afterwards and took some home for later :) Lovely evening. Recommended.

The Denbies Estate, based in Dorking, Surrey, has been family owned and run since 1984. Denbies vineyard was planted in 1986, and since then has become one of the largest wine producers in the UK. Denbies core business is agriculture and we are pleased to be able to offer visitors an insight into wine production in the UK. Denbies wine now competes on an international level, including multiple gold awards for sparkling wine production, the first ever gold for an English rose wine and most recently an international gold for Denbies Noble Harvest Dessert wine. We are honoured over the years to have welcomed several members of the Royal family to the estate, completing the historical connections which date back to Prince Albert in 1851. The Surrey Hills is a beautiful area to live in and while you are visiting do take advantage of the surrounding areas, including 7 miles of public footpath which trail throughout the vineyard. Thank you for visiting Denbies Wine Estate. If you have any questions during your visit, our staff will be very happy to assist you in any matter. We very much hope that you will enjoy your visit.
Visited on the weekend to enjoy the Sparkling Vineyard Tour and Afternoon Tea Hamper and a night's stay at Denbies Hotel with my boyfriend to celebrate our anniversary. We really enjoyed the Vineyard Tour train ride and our tour guide Geoff was delightful - he was very knowledgeable and easy going, glass of sparkling wine on the way up was also a great plus. Due to weather conditions, the Afternoon Tea Hamper had to be hosted indoors rather than on the lawn (which was no problem as we were informed of this prior to the tour). Each hamper was served at a social distance from others also enjoying their hampers and although presented in takeaway paper boxes/ paper cups to ensure covid precautions were adhered to, it was still yummy and good serving sizes for 2 people. Would like to come back and experience Afternoon Tea when things return to 'normal'. Overall, found the experience very enjoyable and good value for money. We also enjoyed our short stay at the hotel. Check in with Peter was very quick and easy - all done behind a screen for coronavirus protection. Dinner and breakfast times had to be pre-booked and orders taken in advance to ensure social distancing measures could take place/ no waiting times for food. We booked a great room with a vineyard view which was lovely to look at in the sunshine. Slept well in a firm, comfy bed and was impressed with the bathroom amenities. For dinner, we were able to reserve seating in one of the private outdoor huts, a great spot to watch the sun set over the vineyard with a glass of wine. With good weather, we really felt like we were abroad and everyone at Denbies made us feel really welcome. If you're looking for a nice little staycation just outside of London, would highly recommend a weekend away at Denbies. Thanks for such a lovely time, we had a great anniversary!

The light morning mists of late summer and early autumn, combined with the relatively cool microclimate which exists at the foot of the gently sloping North Downs Way, allows our grapes to develop wonderful aromas which are part of the unique personality and "terroir" of Godstone Wine. The Deeley family first planted vines at Godstone in 1985 and enjoyed their first vintage in 1988. The vineyard is set in fifty acres of glorious countryside and the vines are grown on a gentle south-facing slope with free-draining Upper Greensand soil. Three varieties of grapes are grown: Seyval Blanc, Dornfelder, and Bacchus, to produce White, Rosé and Sparkling Wine. Godstone Wines are grown and vinified in the modern tradition, ensuring that they encapsulate the fresh floral bouquet and crisp acidic finish that you have come to appreciate in English wines.
Such friendly ladies, delicious cake and only a few mins from the north downs way. Sat and enjoyed the view with a glass of local cider.
Blackdown Ridge is situated overlooking the South Downs National Park. Come and spend a couple of hours with us wandering through the vineyard learning about the viticulture throughout the year, then explore the magic that happens in our winery followed by a tasting of our range of still and sparkling National and International Award winning wines.
