Get to Matera quickly, because it’s still relatively undiscovered by foreign tourists. In town, visit the Domenico Ridola National Museum. Matera’s real claim to fame, though, and the reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the extensive series of cave dwellings ("i sassi") southeast of town, first inhabited by Benedictine and Basilian monks. You’ll see individual cells, chapels, and even some churches, many adorned with Byzantine decorations and frescoes.

B&B Le due nicchie (The two niches), which we visited from September 26th – 29th 2016, is ideally located at about 5 min. by foot to the city center and the train station. The apartment is on the first floor which is accessible by stairs. As there is no elevator, the B&B is not suitable for disabled persons. We were welcomed by Luigi, a very kind and helpful person, who showed us our room at the front of the house. Although it is quite a busy one-way street during the day, at night there is hardly any traffic. Moreover the room is very well insulated. The room was of a fairly good size even with a 3rd. bed. There is a large double bed with a fairly hard mattress. Opposite the bed there is a small TV with only Italian channels. The bathroom is rather small, with the tiniest shower cubicle we ever had. The shower head hangs so low that people over 1.70 m. have to take the shower head in their hand. There are two towels per person. Room and bathroom are impeccable clean. There is a large linen cupboard in the. A common kitchen with other guests can be used. The breakfast is according to Italian standards: one croissant and another piece of bread, biscuits, juice, coffee/tea, milk and cereals. You can have bottles of water for free. The price of 80 euro is rather high. Nevertheless, the B&B is very recommendable, especially because of its location.

Great central place to stay at in Matera, just next door to the Sassi. The apartment was very functional with modern furniture. A kind of place where you feel like home right away. It was in a small side street, so it was quiet despite central buzz not far away. There is coffee, tea, juices, yoghurt and also sweet breakfast prepared in the apartment. The lady who welcomed us gave us a map of Matera with a complete walking tour suggestion, explaining the major things to see and I really appreciated her personal suggestions (like the Casa Noha) that we missed during our previous visit to Matera. She also let us leave the baggage there until 1pm on checkout day. We ate in the closest restaurant (Latteria) and it was really good, so we weren't sad that we didn't find a table in a resto in the Sassi.
