This is the main tourist attraction in Xinzheng, the reputed birthplace of Huangdi (the "Yellow Emperor" - c. 2700 BC), and the site of a Han Dynasty temple (no longer extant) where he was worshiped as First Ancestor of the Han Chinese people. Huangdi worship was outlawed under Mao, but restored in the reforms of 1978. This site was greatly expanded around 2007 and hosts a major Huangdi festival every spring, which attracts thousands of Chinese from all over China, but especially Taiwan. At the time of the expansion the site was made free to the public. Almost nothing here is "real" history, as what we actually know about the historical Huangdi is next to zero. The giant sword and his emperor's "crown" are both anachronisms. No swords existed in China until about 2100 years after Huangdi lived, and the hat is at least 1500 years too soon. This temple is more important for its symbolic value, rather than any actual historical value. A suburb of Qufu in Shandong Province also claims to be the birthplace of Huangdi. In the basement of the main temple at the far north end one can pay to have musicians perform on reproductions of ancient Chinese musical instruments. If you have a group to share the cost, this is a very pleasant experience.

Reconstructed tomb of King of Zheng State, c. 575 BC, whose discovery in 1923 formed the nucleus of the Henan Provincial Museum and contributed to the birth of modern Chinese archaeology. The original bronze vessels are displayed at the Henan Provincial Museum in Zhengzhou or the National Museum or Palace Museum in Beijing. The largest chariot burial here is part of the Zheng King's tomb, with several other tombs and three other chariot burials housed in the two main buildings. A new museum of tomb artifacts was recently added. The fourth chariot burial and several other tombs are in an annex to the main building, but as of October 6, 2015, are not yet open to the public. At least 11 other chariot burials and dozens of tombs lie nearby, though are not yet excavated. This is the best ancient historical site in Xinzheng and one of the best in Henan Province. It currently costs 30 RMB.

Both sides of the river which borders Sias International University have been developed by the city into an amusement park (mostly for children) and a scenic river walk. I'm not sure why someone entitled this a Scenic "Resort," which is a misnomer. Nearby are the remains of the ancient rammed earth city wall of the States of Zheng and Han (770-230 BC), as well as a 1950s vintage F-6 jet fighter (Chinese MiG-19). Years ago one could sit in the cockpit and have a photo taken for 2 rmb, but that is no longer allowed. You can still rent a paddle boat on the river. Along the river are several hundred stone tablets telling the history of Xinzheng (in Chinese). The park is a good spot for a picnic. It is at least one Km long, with new sections being added to the north for walking and fishing. The pagoda in the photo is a great spot for scenic photos, but, unfortunately the stairs are usually closed.

It's nowhere as impressive as the Henan Provincial Museum or the Zhengzhou City Museum in nearby Zhengzhou, but for a small city museum it is pretty decent. Xinzheng has a rich history: Neolithic Peiligang & Yangshao Cultures, reputed birthplace of Huangdi ("Yellow Emperor"), capital of States of Zheng and Han (770-230 BC), and the site of a Northern Song and Ming Dynasty Buddhist temple and pagoda. The museum has lots of Peiligang and Yangshao pottery, stone tools and weapons, and Eastern Zhou bronze ritual vessels, all excavated in or near Xinzheng. A 1923 excavation in Xinzheng of a tomb of a king of Zheng (c. 575 BC) helped created modern Chinese archaeology. But those rather spectacular bronzes formed the nucleus of the Henan Provincial Museum - the bronze vessels currently at Xinzheng are from later excavations. There are two floors and a fairly new porcelain gallery on the second. In back are a number of carved stones: Han tomb doors and lintels and statues from abandoned temples. Like all Chinese museums it is closed on Mondays. Unlike the larger museums, Xinzheng has a 2-3 hour lunch break when it is closed, but the hours vary with the seasons. Thanks to my persistence a few years ago, visitors are now allowed to take photos.

Ouyang Xiu was a great scholar/official during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1126). Eight Imperial tombs from this dynasty are in and around Gongyi, while this tomb is near Xinzheng in Henan Province. I've lived in Xinzheng for over 10 years, and had a hard time finding the place. It is in the neighborhood of Peiligang Village, the type site for the Neolithic Peiligang Culture. This is strictly for the serious historical enthusiast, as there is little to see besides a gate, several buildings where Ouyang Xiu is honored, a garden area, two burial mounds, and some stone tablets for family member burials. I did not see anyone on duty, but there was no one to stop me from going inside and looking around. It was all pleasant solitude inside. Local farmers were using the parking lot outside to dry grain. I suspect I was the first foreigner they had seen there. The tomb is in the country about a half hour from Xinzheng, but perhaps less if you don't get lost.
