The location is at the black sand beach. Is very windy as is beside the ocean.. the sand is black volcano sand.. with the special stone formations. Be careful of the waves though as is might goes very high most of times.

The Golden Circle gets all the publicity, but Vik and the Black Sand Beaches is just as magnificent. The day we visited was windy and rainy, but that just added to the experience. There is plenty of parking near the beach. Riptide warning signs are scattered along the beach warming visitors of the dangerous tides. Area is just beautiful. The drive from Reykjavík to Vik is amazing. The Atlantic on one side and beautiful Mountains with Waterfalls and glaciers on the other. If you are driving from Reykjavík take your time. Enjoy the sites. So much to see besides the Golden Circle.

My husband and I visited this glacier in May 2017.
We were disappointed by the dirty colour of the glacier and the glacier lake, and by the way the glacier has retreated.
Compared to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, there were but a few and very small icebergs in the lake here.
We went to the base of the glacier, but we didn't do the glacier walk.
Possibly the views on top of the glacier are more rewarding, as the glowing reviews of other reviewers suggest.

Peninsula of volcanic origin.
Visited on self-drive tour of the area, and though the signage says 4x4 required to access the lighthouse at the top of the hill I did witness some plucky drivers storming up the hill in 2 wheel cars/people carriers. Once up there-there is a small free car park, but unlike other reviews advice no visible toilet which was a shame. Though the area is small it provides a vista in every direction. Bring your camera and take your time to take it all in.

Such a cool black sand beach with amazing rock columns and a cave for great pictures. Plus there are excellent rock formations in the water, and if it's the right season, you can spot puffins roosting on the cliff. Really great way to spend some time. Warning: do NOT go near the water. They aren't lying about this - the waves are very powerful with a powerful undercurrent and you could be swept out to sea. Tourists have been. But the main areas of interest are far enough away from the water that you should be good!

Had one of our best adventures in Iceland here. Had hiked a glacier in New Zealand but it does not even compare to this one. Gorgeous views and close views of a living glacier! Our guide was outstanding, informative, patient, and helpful. Recommend hike in the morning to avoid the larger crowds. Can also hike close to the glacier on your own.

The Vik Church is perched on a hill top overlooking the town of Vik. Great for a quick stop and photo op on a clear day. Amazon views.
