I have been very fortunate in my lifetime to have taken many wonderful trips and have had a lot of enlightening experiences. But the glacier hike with KWG is one of my favorite. It's a bit unworldly.
Our guide, Hannah, could not have been more helpful, knowledgable and accommodating. We really enjoyed dealing with the entire outfit.

Our guide was a mine of information regarding the history of McCarthy, the fascinating Kennicott historical copper mine and the immense Root Glacier. We spent a wonderful few hours there - can't recommend St Elias Alpine Guides highly enough.

From 4 hour glacier lake and raft adventures, to multi day adventure raft trips, we offer the best trips in the Wrangells. Come with us and discover some of North America's best undiscovered rivers!
Wanting to get outdoors in Wrangell-St Elias National Park without a strenuous hike, we chose a rafting adventure with McCarthy River Tours and Outfitters that we saw as an option in our Alaska TourSaver Book. We met up with Ethan and Sam at their McCarthy location and were fitted with top of the line gear (dry suit to protect us from the frigid Copper River water) and off we went for a short van ride to get to the launch spot. Sam went over rafting safety and once in the boat, got us to practice our strokes in coordination with each other so that we could successfully power through any tough spots on the river. Sam also made certain that our feet were secured to the raft so that we wouldn't fall out if we hit a bump/rock and he went over information that would keep us safe and let s have a fun time.
During the lake part of the trip, we landed the raft on the icy moraine of the Kennecott Glacier and easily climbed up about 10 feet to the edge to look down on a beautiful blue pool of water surrounded by the brown ice. The Kennecott Glacier moraine is huge (fills the whole valley) and in the distance we could hear the rock-laden ice falling from the brown moon-scape looking terrain. We could see water dripping from jagged outcrops our from under places already melting from the underside of the moraine. This piedmont glacier moraine was unlike anything we had ever seen or experienced. Absolutely surreal!
It continued to be a unique experience as we paddled into the river current. I had been rafting in several states, but this trip was nothing like my past trips. First, the water was gray, full of glacial silt, so that you couldn't see the rocks underneath the running water. Second, although it was a Class 2 - 3 at this point (the water on the river was very low) there were very few flat spots, so we only had a 20-30 seconds of rest before we were following Sam's next paddling direction for the next set of rapids. It was really exciting! Still, I did have time to enjoy the scenery along the river - the leaves were turning yellow and the magenta colored fireweed was almost finished flowering near the top of the plants. Fall was in the air and the water was very chilly. The dry suits provided by McCarthy River Tours kept us warm and dry, the only cold part of me was my feet - wear warm wool socks for sure!
Awesome trip! We had many "paddle High-5sk" (where everyone raises their paddle overhead to touch and then slams it in the water to celebrate success) along the route and lots of laughs along the way. I would do this trip again for sure, especially with Sam and Ethan watching out for us and guiding us along.

We offer day trips and 3 scheduled flight daily from Chitina (at the end of the paved road) to McCarthy-Kennicott, flightseeing tours in the best of Wrangell-St. Elias and fly-in backpacking, basecamping and rafting. There are a range of accomodations and activities available at McCarthy-Kennicott so plan on spending a day or two to enjoy the feel of remote Alaskan towns.
booked same day. reservation staff were friendly and courteous. Views were amazing. We did flight to chitina not flight seeing. Pilot I think was John- he was great. Only negative I can think of is we didn't get the red & yellow plane- we got a white one HAHA. and we got back so fast had to wait an hour for the shuttle LOL. I recommend flying to kennicott and shuttle back- I enjoyed the views from the drive and doing both made it perfect

Copper Oar has been offering wilderness rafting and multi-sport adventures in Alaska’s largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias, for over 20 years. Our one-day "raft and flightsee" trip features spectacular views, fun class II-III rapids, the magnificent Nizina Canyon, and a stunning bush plane flight from the river's edge back to McCarthy. We also offer multi-day wilderness adventures and multi-sport package trips. Copper Oar specializes in professional, personable guides, an in-depth knowledge of the local human and natural history, great food, and creating adventures of a lifetime!
We had an absolutely extraordinary experience with Copper Oar on a five day rafting trip down the Nizina River. Everything about it was fantastic, from the mindblowing scenery of wild and untamed Wrangell-St. Elias Park to the incredible care we got and fun we had with our two guides (not to mention the great food they made us every day). If you are considering a visit to Alaska, I can't recommend Copper Oar more strongly, and I highly recommend choosing a multi-day rafting trip to experience the beauty, majesty and serenity of true wilderness. My family will never forget our days on the river with Andrew and Hunter.

High quality local gifts, art, jewelry and cards. Snacks, clothing and sundries. Coffee, espresso and a nice place to sit with a great view of the Kennicott Glacier. Located in downtown Kennecott, across from the lodge. Come and see us!
Great young lady working the store from Hawaii for the summer - loved the handmade gift items the store had to offer. Wonderful deck area to take pictures off of plus the starting point of the guided tours not the National Park service !
