Mention 'The Great Wall' and most people will think about the famous structure near Beijing. However, there is another Great Wall, often known as the 'Jiangnan Great Wall', which is located on a ridge near the town of Linhai in Zhejiang province. Intriguingly, this one can claim to be the original as the hollow block towers on the wall here were the model and template for the famous Great Wall when it was upgraded from an earthen into a stone wall during the Ming Dynasty.
This Great Wall is little known and we only passed less than a dozen other visitors in walking its entire length. Highlights include a steep section called Baibujun, an ancient camphor tree, a sacrificial altar, a plum garden, a rustic Chinese temple and several hollow towers, all of which can be visited along the length of the wall. You need to be in reasonable good health to make it up all the stairs. The experience is definitely worth the effort. You will need 2 to 3 hours to see it all at a leisurely pace.

A small lake in the middle of Old Town Linhai. Not a great path around it, but, some lovely old structures.

We really enjoyed walking down this old street with its timber facades, cobblestone paving and old wells and walls. There are many places to try local Linhai food specialties including a kind of delicious nougat. This old street has not been overly modernized and commercialized: these are local businesses serving local people. Linhai tourism is not very developed overall. The old time atmosphere is very strong here, with a truly authentic flavour.

My late father-in-law was an expert with the abacus so when my wife suggested we take him to see the Abacus Museum while we were living in Linhai I quickly agreed but had Reservations. How interesting could an abacus museum be? And wasn't I wrong. It's a fascinating place. The owner used to work in an abacus factory and began collecting old and unusual versions of this ancient calculator. The museum has an abacus used by China's great statesman, Zhou En Lai, a very old porcelain one dug up while excavating foundations for a new sky-scraper in Shanghai, and others ranging from the very small to the biggest functioning abacus in the world. There are some awesome examples of old Chinese craftsmanship, interesting historical notes, and even a round abacus or two. Well worth a visit.
