The National Orphan Train Complex is a museum and research center located on the corner of Third and Washington Streets in Concordia, Kansas. The mission of the National Orphan Train Complex is to collect, preserve, interpret, and disseminate knowledge about the orphan trains, and the children and agents who rode them. The museum’s collections, exhibitions, programming and research will engage riders, researchers, and the general public and create an awareness of the Orphan Train Movement.
The Orphan Train Museum was our original purpose for traveling to Concordia - 6 teachers who had seen a presentation and had read some books about this period of history. It didn't disappoint - but please allow at least 2 hours if you really want to study the posters and get the whole story. There is a gift shop where you can purchase books that deal with the orphan trains and the guides are very knowledgeable and can answer questions. I have been amazed, after learning about this piece of history, how many of my community members descend from "orphan train riders" - and most people never knew anything about it. I definitely recommend this attraction.

This is one of the best information places we have ever visited. It is staffed by enthusiastic and very informative volunteers who truly have a passion for their city and its history. We thought the brick wall on the side of the building looked interesting, but after hearing about how the wall came about, we walked away with a much greater appreciation for this work of art. We also learned about the POW camp, the Orphan Train Museum and other sites to visit in the town. If you are in Concordia, you really should make time to look at the mural up close and walk inside the building to get more information.

Our group of 6 teachers found this tour to be absolutely fascinating - a piece of history that we don't find in our history books. Paul did a wonderful job of describing the original camp, how it was arranged, how it was administered, how the prisoners were treated, and stories of men who came back or whose families returned because they had good memories of their treatment there. The tour has to be arranged through the Cloud County tourism bureau- they do a fantastic job of arranging things. Our only criticism - we didn't have enough time to take it all in. I would DEFINITELY recommend this tour for anyone who has an interest in American or WWII history.

Restored to it's original 1907 splendor. Another Concordia sight to see. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and had a great love for the building. The history of the family is very interesting. They have a very active list of theatre productions. Highly recommend this tour.

You do need to make advanced plans to be taken on a tour, but it is worth it! The Nazareth Convent and Academy building is just beautiful, inside and out, and the people there are courteous and welcoming. The Sisters of St. Joseph are women to truly admire. Their history is fascinating - the work that they have done and continue to do, both as individuals and as a whole, is world-changing. They continue to have such a positive presence in the communities that they are a part of and it is a treasure to be invited into their home. The Heritage Room and Chapel are must sees as these spaces visually showcase some of the extraordinary work done by the sisters and their connection to God and his people. The craftsmanship, hard work, and attention to detail... wow, you will be in awe!
Although not required, our group was more than happy to offer a generous donation as gratitude for the amazing tour we were provided and to help support this special community of sisters! We hope to come visit again!
