WVU Outdoor Education Center

Just 30 Minutes Away From Downtown Morgantown! In support of its educational and developmental mission at West Virginia University, Adventure WV has recently collaborated with the WVU Division of Forestry & Natural Resources to create a canopy tour facility. Located just off the Cooper's Rock exit, the WVU Zip Canopy Tour is believed to be the first university-owned and operated canopy tour facility in the United States. The purpose and mission of the WVU Zip Canopy tour is to ensure a fun, safe and accessible environment where people can both learn and recreate. Individuals who participate on tour will experience the following: 1. 6 tree based platforms (up to 40 feet in height) 2. 4 zip lines (longest zip 850 feet at approximately 30 mph) 3. 1 sky bridge 4. 1 tandem person rappel 5. Interpretive information about the University Forest at each platform Tours typically take 2 hours and are guided by professional staff members. Interpretive talks are also facilitated throughout each tour. Participants are given the opportunity to learn about the University Forest all while zipping among the trees. Guests are encouraged to ask questions, be themselves and have fun! The WVU Zip Canopy Tour is open to both the WVU community and general public. Please be sure to review our guidelines before purchasing your spot.

Coopers Rock State Forest

Established in 1936, Coopers Rock State Forest boasts some of the most iconic views in Almost Heaven. Located just off I-68, about 13 miles from Morgantown, the park features canyon overlooks, historical sites, picnic shelters, 50 miles of hiking and biking trails, sandstone cliffs for climbing and bouldering, cross-country ski terrain, a lake perfect for reeling in trout and a nearby river for rafting. Winter Note: Coopers Rock State Forest main gate is closed until April 1st, 2021. The forest is still accessible by foot or bike, however, vehicles may park at the day use parking area. It is roughly 3-miles from the parking area to the main overlook along the road or roadside hiking trail.

A beautiful state park with miles of trails of all kinds leading through the forest. Also offering tons of amazing views and also picnic areas for rent and well as a gift shop near the top of the mountain. Very worth the hike to get to the top or you can drive up there to see the overlook view. It is stunning at the top. I would say a must see for this area.

Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground

Reviewed By AllenC155 - Morgantown, United States

I've stayed in a lot of state park campgrounds, but this one ran by the county eclipses them all with similar pricing. They have several cabins of different sizes, but we always camp right on the lake which has a swim beach free for anyone who cares to use it with a lifeguard. They new camp store is amazing as are the staff. We don't live far away so often attend the many free kids events they host or just to munch on a snack from the camp store while my daughter plays on the modern playground equipment. We can go out after dinner and set up the tent while she is playing, spend the evening making smores by the fire, go to sleep by an orchestra of nature, and do some fishing in the morning all for about the same cost of taking my family to the movies.
