Located approximately 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Providence, the town was founded by Congregationalist separatists from Swansea, Massachusetts.

The trails at Osamequin are very pleasant, and not strenuou. Dogs are allowed (on leash, lots of birds to watch especially near sunrise / sunset, and the water views is remarkable. At nearby Walker's Farm there is public access for kayaking, too.
