Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ), which is known simply as Subic Bay, is the Philippines' first successful case of a military base converted through volunteerism into a tax- and duty-free zone similar to Hong Kong and Singapore, operated and managed by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority or SBMA. It covers the fenced area of the former U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay located in the southwest of Luzon Island in the Philippines and surrounded by the municipalities of Subic and Olongapo City in Zambales and Hermosa and Morong in Bataan, in concurrence of these municipalities' Sangguniang Bayan, pursuant to Section 12 of RA 7227. The harbor faces the Zambales Mountain Range to the west and the Subic Bay opening to the South China Sea. It is northwest of the Bataan Peninsula and southwest of Zambales Province.

Pamulaklakin Forest Trail

I wanted to do a jungle training and saw there were 2 possibilities in Subic: JEST or Pamulaklakin. The first one sounded more commercial so I decided to go for the latter and what a incredible time I had. The Pamulaklakin trail is on Aeta land, an indigenous tribe that lives in the hills. I was by myself and decided to book an overnight stay as well. They provided the tent. My guide, MinMin, picked me up at the trailhead and we started hiking up. He is small (like most of the tribe, but incredibly fast and very knowledgeable. He is proficient in English and knows all the plants and animals. The Aeta are a tribe of @ 500 families. Their village has a school and MinMin works on the family farm. He taught me how to make fire, use a machete, make a trap etc. He also cooked me a meal and set up my tent Then ... we went to visit some of his family. Marilyn, who is the person I had phone contact with and with whom I confirmed my arrival, is incredible! Smart as a whip and very hospitable. Let's just say we ended up singing karaoke at her place later that evening. Incredibly warm people and I truly recommend this experience

I had a great time looking at the animals. l recommend taking the jeepney ride to see the tigers. See if other people on the jeepney will split the cost of feeding the tigers. lt's worth the time to see the special presentations. They offer a senior discount.

We spent 2 hours while on a stop from our cruise ship at Subic Bay. Getting there on the Jeep minibus was an experience by itself! The place is very well run and clean, with good safety measures including mandatory life jackets. There are rides for any level, including very high and scary ones! Highly recommend if you happen to be in Subic Bay.

We enjoyed staying here. Here are the reasons why: 1. Lot's of pools and slides 2. Beach activities 3. Food is great (They even gave us a free fruit platter) 4. Staffs are friendly, great customer service - they will anticipate your needs (if we need extra chairs, extra table, slippers, need the whirlpool to run and etc), will make suggestions (I was craving for coffee but since I am pregnant - I am avoiding caffeine. One of their staffs suggested an alternative), very polite (everyone will greet you and they all wear a smile). 5. Clean rooms and facilities
