Langham Dome

A small but perfectly formed museum, created inside a WW2 anti-aircraft gunner training Dome in the middle of Langham Airfield in north Norfolk. We offer a wide variety of opportunities for learning and fun for all the family - informative displays and videos, online games, a dressing up cupboard, a training gun to have a go on, a picnic site and much more.

From the driving past the outside you would not realise how interesting this little dome would be! Stop though and read the information encapsulated on the tops of the picnic tables in the grounds and you get a taste of things to come! We found the exhibits and films thoroughly absorbing! A great insight into how the war affected the lives of the people this sleepy hamlet!

We had a fantastic morning here. The gardens are beautiful, alot more than we expected. There are some great ideas which we have come away with for our own garden and a few plants from the shop ???? The harvest mice are adorable and the bird feeders kept us well entertained while we had lunch in the cafe, which was lovely!! They are dog friendly and very welcoming 5⭐

Took my toddler here on a family holiday last summer. He loved it so much, he mentions it pretty much every day. He has been begging to go back, I told him once “everyone stopped having a cold and it was allowed to open” we would. Every day he has been asking if today was the day. That’s how good this place is! So earlier this week today was the day, and we made a 4 hour round trip to visit, and wow it was still worth it. There is so much to see here, along with information for older ones and adults. We walked round the entire museum 3 times, and my son also enjoyed the play area. We didn’t use the cafe ourselves but it was open during our visit. The toilets were clean. They had a one way system in place (it was already there to begin with) and the place is so spacious I did not feel uncomfortable at all Covid wise. The staff we encountered were pleasant and helpful. I was pleased to find some nice sticker books in the gift shop as we struggled for something age appropriate in there last time. If I could make any suggestion, if would be to please stock some little army related bits for tiny ones in the gift shop (eg little die cast tanks?). He’s already asking when we can visit again! So I guess we’ll see you soon...

Baconsthorpe Castle

Baconsthorpe Castle - really an old manor house with a moat is a wonderfully preserved ruin with the old moat. Out in the sticks (well it was originally for a sheep rearing family), its a little tricky to find outside the nearby village, along farmers tracks, but well worth the effort. Small free car park, and free to visit. Well maintained by English Heritage. No tourist trappings or rubbish here. Wonderful way to spend the morning watching swans on the moat!

My husband is very interested in birds and I’m very happy on beaches, so after an hour on Cley beach, we headed to the Wildlife Trust Visitors Center for some information. It’s a modern building across the road from Cley Marshes where it has 3 large hides. We paid the £4.50 each and walked the well-maintained trail through the reeds to the hides. It’s a practical place, with benches and hinged shutters inside that allow viewing of the birds and wildlife with little disturbances to them. That being said, it’s also well-landscaped and pretty with great views. The Visitors Centre itself has a shop, art gallery, cafe, toilets and outdoor viewing deck. When we had parked in the NWT car park at the beach, the man selling car park tickets was friendly, enthusiastic and informative. In contrast, at the Visitors Centre, which was quite crowded, there seemed to be only 1 woman behind the information desk busy selling things and some cafe staff. Maybe they don’t have enough volunteers or staff? I’m not an expert in these places, but I enjoyed visiting the hides and my husband was very happy, hence the high score of 5*.

This is a wonderful place. I love this coast and the marshes are something special . Easy to walk out on the coastal path the the real pebbly beach with its small fishing boats. Best to go on a day when its windy and a little wet to get a real good feel of the coast.

The Holt Owl Trail is just great. It is a terrific idea to have plaques on the pavement that guide you around 24 different points of interest. Stop at the new Council Offices in historic Nelson House on White Lyon Street near the Owl Tea room and Adnams and pick up a guide book which will assist you around this Historic Georgian town. The booklet is current and up to date and it is easy to spot the points of interest. The text is informative but not too long full of facts and stories. Finish your walking tour with a trip to the bookshop in Appleyard where you can pick up a copy of Escapades in Holt: A fine Georgian Town and you can continue the fun following Olly the owl as he poetically explains even more about the town and its history.
