Kinmen Island

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

In 1958, China attempted to invade Kinmen which was then known as Quemoy. The invasion almost sparked World War III. The invaders were repulsed by the Taiwan forces, led by President Chiang Kai-shek. Kinmen is 10 km (6 miles) from Shamen, on the Chinese mainland. You can hire a telescope; you can clearly see people moving around on the mainland. Kinmen is a small island, around 150 square kms. Kinmen is a traditional Chinese society, there is a lot to see, despite its small size

Kinmen Military Headquarters of the Qing Dynasty

Reviewed By CoopTW - Taipei, Taiwan

With hundreds of years of history to tell, they do a good job of condensing it into what can be a hour or two of walking through the various buildings and reading the stories - in Chinese and English - which basically lay out what went on here since the beginning of migration from China to Kinmen. For those less interested in reading all the stories, the visual presentation is still informative and basically leads one through from the earlier times up to the more recent history of the site. The use of wax figures adds interest, and be sure to see the basement jail. For the nature lovers in your group who reluctantly "came along" to see this historical site, take them to the very back to see the nearly 24M tall "Cotton Tree", which is well over 100 years old. If you are there in the Spring, you're in for a treat with the beautiful orange blossoms.

Zhaishan Tunnel

Having seen other wartime and historic sites and tunnels, I was dubious about yet another. But this is THE ONE to include if you're sightseeing. The island has an interesting history with two attempted takeovers by the mainland. These tunnels are huge and well worth a visit.
