August 1, 2021 Flossie Demartino

Taking in the breathtaking beauty of Nantou's Sun Moon Lake is truly an ethereal experience. The turquoise basin is shaped like the sun on the east side, a crescent moon on the west, and it reads like a rippling celestial journey. After a day of hiking the seven miles of trails in the lake's surrounding mountains, hop a cable car and whiz through the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village or take a soothing dip in one of the area's many hot springs. Local farms grow juicy drupe fruits, the perfect refreshment on a steamy day.

Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area

The climate of the four seasons in Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area is distinct, and each season has very diverse scenery. In spring, you will see trees growing in green abundance with new leaves. In summer, the cool weather and beautiful sea of flowers of the blooming alpine plants is very attractive. In autumn, splendid red leaves glow, while the winter brings pure, white snow. If you stay in Song-Syue Lodge, you can enjoy the gorgeous glow of the ocean of stars. Transport to this location is convenient so it is a great place to enjoy the mountain scenery of Taiwan.

Did a road trip from Hualien to Taroko Gorge and Hehuanshan before arriving at CingJing. It was long and winding road from Taroko gorge to Hehuanshan with my husband and i dozing off alternatively. There are few rest areas for toilet breaks, however we did not find much cafes or restaurants on the way so highly suggest to take fulfilling meal before or pack some bites. This is by far the tallest spot i have gone to, and i have no regrets. Mother Nature is beautiful, and the view from the top resonates this. Saw some snow on the way to the top also. For someone who loves nature as much as me, believe me when i say that this place is worth the trip as the surrounding is phenomenal!! Weather at the top can drop suddenly so it is advisable to bring thick jackets. It was 17 degrees when we reached, which soon dropped to 6.5degrees after 10mins. My only regret is not being able to watch the sunrise or sunset, but judging from multiple blogs i have read, the view would have spectacular during these times. However, we reached there almost evening and it was magical enough. I would definitely go again, just for the view and the cloud sea!

We arrived just on the opening time (9am) to find no one else there. After a steady, but taxing climb of nearly 600m we came to the pagoda and it’s accompanying great drum. The adventurous can climb the pagoda (about 8 levels) for a great view over the lake.

Sun Moon Lake

This is one of the most popular places to visit in Taiwan. We took the Nantou Sun Moon Lake bus from Gancheng Bus Station in Taichung early in the morning. Just buy the bus tickets on board. There was a half price promotion when we visited that day. We used our Easy Card prepaid cards which were very handy when using public transport, just tap on and tap off. The bus also passes by the TRS Railway station and the HSR Railway station in Taichung where you can also board if there are vacant seats. We went on a weekday, so there were ample seats. Sun Moon Lake is quite beautiful and you need at least a full day to enjoy the sights and activities there. Even then, it was quite hectic. An overnight trip would have been more relaxing. We took unlimited boat rides to the various places around the lake. Weather was sunny. We also hired bikes to cycle to the Xiangshan Visitor Centre from Shuishe. Sun Moon Lake is a nice place to walk, cycle or take boat rides to enjoy the scenery, cool weather and sights. Going back to Taichung was also by Nantou bus from the Shuishe Visitor Centre. We bought our boat and bike hire tickets online, which were way cheaper.

We paid a total of 840NT for the Green Green grassland and skywalk for two adults and two students. The student price did not include the combo so we had to buy skywalk tickets separately. There were some shows featuring how to use a whip and also a horse show but we did not see either . We were all busy snapping away as the views were superb . In all we spent about 1.5 to 2 hours. I suppose if you like to see the shows you can expect to spend about 3-4 hours here .

Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village

Formosa Aboriginal Cultural Village has the largest outdoor museum in Taiwan dedicated to displaying the traditional homes and architecture of Taiwanese indigenous tribes. The nine villages are arrayed over an expansive section of hillside to give visitors a feel of what native Taiwanese villages looked like so many years ago. All buildings were reconstructed based on fieldwork research and blueprints drawn up by anthropologists in the 1930s and 40s.

There are two entrances to the park . One is from the cable car from sun moon lake , the other at the park entrance itself . On 2&3 January 20, the cable car was closed for maintenance . We entered the park from the main park entrance . Entrance fee was about S$40 per pax . Near the entrance were the rides like Aladdin world with the Viking , space mountain ,Maya adventure with the twisting coaster , UFO , Spanish Coast with the water rides like water rafting and splash mountain . There was also an arcade area and play area where we spent almost an hour trying to fish for tiny rubber fishes with paper nets . 7 nets for 100NT . Once the net breaks , game is over. We won two pikachu soft toys! Lunch was at the burger and chicken joint. Then we took the skyline cable car ride within the park up to the other entrance where the aborigine shows , exhibits and games were situated . You can either walk down which we did (very easy walk about 30-45 min)or take the skyline back. We played archery , blow darts and had a good time watching an aborigine lady show us how to make glass beads. A lot of the restaurants were closed however so we smacked on sausages. Loved the fact that there were so many taps on the way for people to wash their hands . All in all , a lovely 4 hour spent in the park . There was also a huge souvenir shop at the park entrance that we came in from .
