Donnelly's Castle

Reviewed By Ginges_revenge - Brisbane, Australia

This was one of my favourite spots for the weekend. Even though I am in my mid 40's, it made me feel like a kid again, exploring through the amazing rock formation that is Donnelly's castle. Its a bit of trek out of the center of Stanthorpe (20 mins approx. but is well worth the drive. There is a lookout on top which is an easy walk up a gentle slope with a few stairs onto a large granite outcrop which is fenced for safety. Even though all the other boulders you can fall off of. Bit of a laugh that. Anyway, its history is of supporting a place of bushrangers to hide out in, most notably Captain Thunderbolt (AKA Frederick Wordsworth Ward) in the mid 1800's. There is a great picnic area there, small car park, some wood fire BBQ's, a council toilet as well. It would make a great area for a visit, lunch and some exploring.

What a lovely way to spend a morning in the week before Christmas. We met some beautiful animals and fed them. Some people were picking out a Christmas tree. There was delicious Belgian hot chocolate and the most glorious Christmas shop - full of decorations, ornaments and pressies. Great concept guys - I'll be back with kids next Christmas.

A great little place for afternoon tea, and the lady who runs it is so friendly, we asked her to join us. The shop has lots of pretty and interesting things available, and the gardens are beautiful. They have RV parking and overnight stays available. Certainly worth a look.

The Red Bridge

Reviewed By scottbeesley86 - Stanthorpe, Australia

Red Bridge has been a great place to go for as long as I've lived in Stanthorpe. When I was a kid there wasn't a footpath that led all the way there, you had do follow a bush track. The footpath they have now is always a pleasant little stroll. Once you get there it's a great spot to explore around with the kids. Plenty of rocks to climb around on and water to throw rock in and whatnot. There's also a great bush track (Shauns way I think it's called) that heads up towards Mt Marley. It comes out at Finney's Lane. From there you can also find 'humble way' which is more of a bike track that will take you to the base of Mt Marley. Plenty of spots for a picnic in there. Red bridge itself is a great spot to go to feel like you're in the middle of no-where while still being close to town. Also really great whenever the steam train comes to town as you can watch it go over the big bridge. It's also very pretty at sunset.
