Jenny and I have just cycled the Erewash Valley Trail again - my third time over the past few years. It's a delightful route and well-signed all the way, pretty level with only short ascents (e.g. as one of the Erewash canal rises via various locks on the way north) and almost exclusively off-road apart from some quiet back streets as you navigate around Beeston. We chose to ride it clockwise and to start at the northern end, up at Langley Mill Basin, but obviously you can start anywhere on the 30-mile round route. Our day's ride took us south via the route of the disused Nottingham Canal through a wide section of an open valley, then along quiet estate roads through to Chilwell, the Attenborough Nature Reserve (crowded, this, especially at weekends), and then by the riverside to Trent Lock and the halfway point. From there the route turns north and we followed the Erewash Canal towpath - a delight and a great opportunity to see all the different ways householders with canal frontage have used it as part of their back gardens. Good surface nearly all the way north on the Erewash Canal section, but there are a lot of squeeze stiles and it's a popular route for walkers and cyclists etc so don't expect a fast ride. It's a lovely ride overall though and there are lots of pubs en route north, as well as a pub and ice creams at Trent Lock - and the Attenborough Reserve Visitor Centre does food too, though it's nearly always busy. Enjoy! - as we did :-)

I met a friend for a walk round Rufford Country Park on a lovely sunny September day. Very well organised and Covoid safe. Plenty of places to sit and relax, have a picnic and sit in the sun. Car parking is £4 for the day and you can buy your ticket in advance. A great day out.
