Encompassing two of the Netherlands’ three largest cities (Rotterdam and The Hague), Zuid-Holland (South Holland) is also home to important towns like Leiden, Gouda and Delft. And many lovely smaller towns dot the gorgeous green landscape. Alphen aan den Rijn has several interesting attractions, including Dutch history theme park Archeon. Picturesque Kinderdijk, birthplace of the legend of the Cat and the Cradle, also has many windmills that together are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For ages -until 1911- the tower served as a lighthouse. On the first floor there is an interesting exhibition about lighthouses as well as of the history of the Goedereede tower. Originally the Gothic style tower, completed in 1512, was attached to a church that fell into disrepair and was demolished at the end of the 1600s. The small Dutch reformed church nearby was built in 1706. The view from the top of the tower is spectacular.

There is then another couple of short flights of stairs until you reach the final lift that takes you to the top and gives great panoramic views and a brief history of the city. My son married a girl from Holland so I have seen some parts of the country. It is amazing the world comes here to negotiate world order. The easy access around town with buses and trolleys is remarkable. Wonderful museums and the locals love Americans. Sunshine, walking tours, bicycle tours kept me moving. I love this place

From the outside, this museum looks very incongruous with it's surroundings. However, when you get closer you can see the thatched wall coverings and observation tower. Inside there are interactive demonstrations about the areas wildlife, geography and construction of the barrages to protect the land from sea water. The staff were friendly and chatty, entry is free, and there is a café. Our visit lasted about an hour.
