Bosco di San Francesco

Reviewed By amall68 - Sliema, Malta

The day started off with some rain but it soon lifted and we had a most beautiful experience walking in the woods. we started from the entrance gate in the wall in front of the Basilica. The volunteers from FAI were very welcoming and helpful in explaining the trails. The walk down to the visitor centre is charming though after the rains it can be somewhat slippery so good shows and a steady hand are needed. The visitor centre next to the chapel of Santa Croce is well organized and provides details of the recovery and restoration works. From there we walked to the Mill and stream and then to the Land art installation by Pistoletto known as Il Terzo Paradiso. This expanse of land with three circles outlined by olive trees provides a quasi ethereal experience. Initially we intended to retrace our steps to the Basilica but instead found a little pathway that took us up the opposite hillside and back to Assisi from Porta Perlici. All in all a great walk and immersion in the woods surrounding Assisi.

La Valle - Naturalistic Oasis

The area of 'La valle' is located between S.Feliciano, S.Savino e S.Arcangelo in the township of Magione. It covers an area of approximately 1000 hectars, occuping one of the most interesting naturalistic section of the entire regional natural park of lake Trasimeno. The lake, which covers124 kmq, is the fourth-largest lake in terms of surface area, with a perimeter of 54 kmq and a maximum depth of just 6.70 m. Among all the lake environments, the most interesting and representative one is undoubtedly marked by the wetlands, with extensive reedbeds that grow close to the banks of the lake and characterised by their shallow waters. This area shelter and feed an incredible number of animal species and birds in particular, many of which have great scientific value. In fact, the lake Trasimeno is set in a strategic location along the flyways of many bird species distinctive of wetlands: many of them stop here for breeding, others for wintering and others for integrating the food reserves during the journey, so that every season of the year offers different and interesting observations. The oasis is open to guided tours of both individuals and groups at a very cheap price.

Le Fonti del Clitunno

Exquisite historic river with springs along the busy Via Flamina is this oasis of tranquility and calm. Virgil wrote of its natural beauty where the Emporer Caligula came to worship the River God Clitunno and consult the ancient oracles. One of my favorite places to visit for its serene natural beauty coupled with its ancient origins.
