Puerto Limón (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈpweɾto liˈmon]), commonly known as Limón (Spanish for "lemon"), is the capital city and main hub of Limón province, as well as of the cantón (county) of Limón in Costa Rica. It is the sixth-largest city in Costa Rica, with a population of over 55,000 (including surrounding towns), and is home of a multicultural community. Part of the community traces its roots to Italian, Jamaican and Chinese laborers who worked on a late nineteenth-century railroad project that connected San José to Puerto Limón. Until 1948, the Costa Rican government did not recognize Afro-Caribbean people as citizens and restricted their movement outside Limón province. As a result of this "travel ban", this Afro-Caribbean population became firmly established in the region, which influenced the decision to not move even after it was legally permitted. Nowadays, there is an important outflow of Limón natives who move to the country's Central Valley in search for better employment and education. The Afro-Caribbean community speaks Spanish and Limonese Creole, a creole of English.

We visited as part of our cruise. However, we signed up for the BEHIND the SCENES tour which was a bit pricey. That said, it was worth every penny.. Just getting to see baby sloths up close is an incredible experience. We learned so much about the sloths and their care. The facility is wonderful and a true must see for animal lovers. It was a privilege to meet the woman who started the organization as well as her daughter. We were, however, saddened to learn of the passing of Buttercup as she started the entire operation. Really, it is a wonderful place.

This river is a favorite for white-water rafting.
This was a great excursion. Exploradores Outdoors was the tour provider - via Princess Cruises shore excursions. Tour guides were excellent - very friendly and knowledgeable. The river was fun! Decent rapids but nothing crazy, don’t worry. Saw a couple sloths along the way... we were actually able to pull over to get out of the raft for a closer look. Buffet lunch afterwards was a nice touch. Highly recommend. Thanks guys!

We visited this Park as a day trip from a cruise line. There is so much to see in the Park, including an exhibit area providing live wildlife (separated by glass to keep them and us safe), a wonderful butterfly exhibit of mounted specimens, and an area enclosed by netting with many of the butterflies from the previous exhibit flying around us. We had a short but very interesting presentation by one of the researchers explaining aspects of the work they are doing in the Park. The aerial tram ride provided a wonderful swatch through the park allowing us to capture some of the vastness of this place. We were even able to see our ship in the distance at one point. At the bottom of the ride we walked a platform further into the rainforest. Although we saw limited wildlife, it was amazing just to be able to walk through this facility. Great care was taken to keep us on the platform. Our guide, Wendy, who was with us from the time we left the ship until our return, was well versed in her country and added many details was we visited the Park. She was careful to point out camouflaged frogs and snakes in the exhibit area. We were disappointed at the poverty and excessive garbage in many of the areas during the one hour bus ride to and from the Park. The road was also quite rough, which could be a problem for anyone susceptible to motion sickness. With such a spectacular Park, one would have expected the local government to assist with cleaning up the road in. We and those we spoke with on our tour were definitely glad we signed up for this one.

Get a boat ride with Desmon Garth - he's super skilled at maneuvering the canal, would spot all sorts of animals and stop so you get to see them. ????

We didn't spend much time here, but I thought it was a great beach. The waves were really big the day we were there. So I didn't spend much time in the water. Just walking around and enjoying the warm weather was a treat! Lots of families were at the beach playing, eating and having fun.

There are sidewalks, There are HUGE palms. There are statues and art work and nearby crafts. And a seaside view. And....the best part? Locals will point out sloths and owls that live in the palms! Rest on benches. Eat local handheld food. Enjoy the sun and walks. The park is not large but it holds delightful things for those who care to stop and see.
