Afyonkarahisar (Turkish pronunciation: [afjonkaɾahiˈsaɾ], Turkish: afyon "poppy, opium", kara "black", hisar "fortress") is a city in western Turkey, the capital of Afyon Province. Afyon is in mountainous countryside inland from the Aegean coast, 250 km (155 mi) south-west of Ankara along the Akarçay River. Elevation 1,021 m (3,350 ft). Population (2010 census) 173,100 In Turkey, Afyonkarahisar stands out as a capital city of thermal and spa, an important junction of railway, highway and air traffic in West-Turkey, and the grounds where independence had been won. In addition, Afyonkarahisar is one of the top leading provinces in agriculture, globally renown for its marble and globally largest producer of pharmaceutical opium.

Hacıvelioglu Mansion was built in 1897. Its importance today mainly comes from its role in the War of Independence. It was used as a military headquarter by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk during the Independence War. Ataturk stayed in this house for a night and marched to Kocatepe that is 20 km to the west of Suhut where the Turkish army started large-scale attacks against the Greek forces.

It is one of the example structures which are facade architecture for social purposes. After the restoration it is redecorated as to reflect the traditional Afyonkarahisar life style at the time of its construction.

The old mansion is claiming 632 squaremeters, and having Final Period Ottomon architecture traits. It was built in 1910. It was restorated by Afyonkarahisar Municipalityand in 2017 after the restoration began to serve as culture and art house. Each room of the house was decorated to resemble culture of Afyonkarahisar. The importance of this building, is that Mustafa Kemal, the Commander-in-chief; Ismet Inonu, the Commander of Western Front; Fevzi Cakmak, the Chief of the General Staff; and Tevfik Bıyıklıoglu, the Chief of Western Front Actions Office all stayed in this historical building and used here as headquarters upon the liberation of Afyonkarahisar from the occupation of the enemies on August 27th, 1922.
