Dated but good location and value
Reviewed By STN1952Typical Campanile, you know what you are getting, basic furnishing, relatively comfortable and clean. This hotel is showing signs of age, cracking of the walls, damp in the bathroom ceiling, peeling wallpaper and paintwork. Parking is good. On a busy roundabout there is a degree of traffic noise, but with the window shut it wasn't too intrusive. We arrived to find the restaurant was shut, however, the manager recommended La Boucherie just 5 minutes walk away which proved excellent. Good value for one night if you book in advance.

Adequate hotel but fantastic breakfast!
Reviewed By Steven PWe were stopping over on our way back from the Dordogne and just wanted somewhere to sleep. The room felt a bit like a hostel, being in a long annexe out the back but it was clean and comfortable. The evening meal was good value but the breakfast was superb, having the best cheese selection I have ever had in a hotel

Large, nicely decorated room, excellent meals
Reviewed By glassyravenSpent the night here en route from Moustiers to Cancale (our 2nd visit here). We were welcomed warmly and shown to our room, which was spacious and well-appointed. The bath, which has a large opening into the room, has a large claw-foot tub and a large towel warmer, 2 sinks, and an enclosed WC. Unfortunately, wifi was very slow; we couldn’t watch our US nightly news. Dinner was excellent. They offer a well-priced 3 course menu with a variety of selections and some well-priced wines and aperitifs. Service was friendly and efficient, and the ambiance was elegant — nice stemware and table setting. Optional breakfast was also excellent, in their relatively new breakfast room. We highly recommend.

Reviewed By jeffreyr932This is about the hotel and not the restaurant in this little French town enroute to Clermont Ferrand. The restaurant is first rate. The hotel is 3rd rate. Courtyard room out back that we had was very dirty, with the shower just a disgrace. Mold and mildew everywhere. Floors dirty. Toilet itself dirty. Management in hotel part had a very don't bother me attitude. Dirty condition of room and bath just not acceptable. Restaurant as previously stated was excellent. Eat there but don't stay there.

Reviewed By Galloise09We were travelling back to the UK through France and decided not to stay in the larger location of Chateauroux but to motor on to the little village of Vatan. We should have taken heed and fled when the door of the hotel was locked but we knocked on the wooden side gate and was greeted by the owner. He informed us that they had a room but no food other than breakfast which was fine by us as we thought we would sample the village cuisine and hospitality (how wrong can you be). The room was 88€ a night and to say it was basic would be an understatement, the bedside lamps were not even on side tables but placed precariously onto small pouffe footstools that then left no room for even your phone. The bedding was thin and the pillows very lumpy so a poor nights sleep sadly. As for the bathroom, it was just about holding together and if you are on the larger size, there is no way you would fit into the shower. For the exorbitant price of the hotel room, you do get a sachet of shower gel/hand wash and a plastic cup each. No tea making facilities or notes re internet availability. We asked when booking in where in the village we could eat that evening (we had arrived around 6:30 after a long day on the road), only to be told nowhere was open and we would have to travel 30 mins to Chateauroux!! It seems out of peak season no place is open in the evenings, not even a bar. In the morning, we went down to the breakfast which we had requested when booking in and found the most meagre offerings we have ever seen in all our years travelling France. The bread rolls were not fresh and the Croissants were literally bite size and not from any baker (more like the type you get in bags at the local supermarkets) along with one half filled pot of tea each. The grand cost of the breakfast was 9€ each. I would recommend to anyone thinking of staying in this place, to keep your foot on the peddle and motor on to find a lovely little place further along the route. I don't think I have ever been to France and came away from a village hotel feeling the place is one big Con with our total bill 106€ for the double room and what barely passed for a breakfast. Keep moving past this hotel and its poor offerings would be my advice.

Reviewed By Christine CHôtel : vieux bâtiment dans son jus, décoration et équipements vieillots, chambre bruyante, aucune insonorisation, sanitaires laissants vraiment à désirer !!! Tout est à refaire... Restaurant très moyen, aquarium dégoûtant (non entretenu), plats bons sans plus. Il manque vraiment un coup de fraîcheur, de propreté et de modernité dans cet établissement !!! Par contre, accueil très sympathique !
