My spouse and I decided to go on a weekend getaway to Houghton Lake over a weekend in March 2022. We decided to stay at the Beachfront Hotel which was an excellent choice for us! We arrived on a Friday evening and checked out Sunday morning. Overall, this is a nice hotel. It's a bit of an older property, but it's kept up fairly well for the most part. Our room (#416) was clean, comfortable, had a balcony, and overlooked Houghton Lake. We slept very well. Something we noticed, though, was that the towel rack next to the sink in our room kept coming loose. There were a couple of times when I had to secure the fixture back into place. One nice thing about this hotel is that it has a hot tub in its indoor pool area. We used the hot tub which felt great. The downsides, though, to the hot tub, were that it was on the older side (not the most visually appealing) and had too much foam in it. There's a business center computer on the 4th floor, but when I tried to use it, it wasn't working properly... perhaps it just needed a re-boot or something. I can't speak to the breakfast because we ended up going out for breakfast at local restaurants on the two mornings that we stayed here. Altogether, we enjoyed our stay and would gladly stay here again the next time we visit this area. It was very wintry and blustery during our stay, so we couldn't spend much time outside. Maybe in the future we can come back in the summer and enjoy the beach. :)

Room was clean, Attendant was very nice. The bed is hands down the worst bed , it was like a sheet of plywood. I actually considered going to to my car to sleep during the night. Also, it's a two story hotel and there was no elevator, was not expecting that with the strict ADA laws in MI. Had to lug everything up and down stairs. Refrigerator in room didn't work either. I would not stay here again.

This hotel was very dirty. The pool was dirty, our room was dirty, the commons area was even dirty. They were out of towels so we couldn’t get fresh towels. The bathtub had a crack in it, dryer was out of service. It was overall not a good experience.

We are a full service resort located on beautiful Houghton Lake. With Banquet holding up to 400 people
Filthy, grimy, nasty, old, rusty, moldy pool - waterpark area. Old, & run down, everything is rusted and moldy. Even the support beams of the place were severely rusted all over, which should be replaced. Whomever checks this place out should shut it down. The bathrooms were even worse if you can imagine... Bugs, honest to God, bugs dead in all the water in every pool, hot tub. Mostly winged little bugs, but others as well. The bottom of the Lazy so called River that does not move, was shocking looking, the water was clear in it and the bottom & wall in it was disgusting looking. Rusty all over & chipped up badly, just really gross looking with dark moldy looking spots. Every surface around the water was pretty moldy. The rest of the water areas had darker bottoms that you could not really see well, SCARY YES~! Actual trash & grime everywhere on floors throughout the whole place. So much so it looked as though the floor had not been cleaned in years~! I had grime all over my feet, it grossed me out so badly we left after just a very short time. Garbage, filth everywhere & hairballs all over, way too much to try & even fathom explaining but I will try. On your way up the old, dirty cement steps & rusty rails to the big RUSTY slide there was a roof area to the plumbing room, and it was covered in garbage, like decades worth & old, nasttttyyy tarps laying up there, they were so moldy & gross I took pics. They won't let me upload them here though... Tons of trash up there and corroded grime, dust balls, hair, nasty Band-Aids, moldy, torn up wrist bands, old moldy stuff all over, just filth is the only way to explain it. And the maintenance people have access to it and could clean it up, but obviously do not do so. If you are concerned about your & your children's health, go elsewhere. I am very sad to make this review, I was hoping to leave a much better one... But for the sake of everyone including children, I could not go without leaving this honest review. Only good thing to say is the staff was friendly, as they should be in the hotel industry.

Reservation person (Jo) and Maintenance person (Jerry)/host are great--warm, friendly and genuinely interested in making sure the stay is okay in the terribly maintained cabins on top the hill. Owner refuses health protocol and does not wear a mask or follow any health protocol during the pandemic (was surprised to find floors that were not cleaned in years, etc. in the cabins as well - so I cleaned up a bit myself which is no big deal for up north!) Owner is severely paranoid and I would not advise renting equipment from him. Owner blamed me for a small chip on the bumper guard to an ATW that could have occurred with a flying rock, etc. and threatened to charge me 170 for the "damage". All other ATVs at the location had numerous dings and scratches as can be expected for an ATV used primarily off-road. Honestly - if there was damage that I caused I would be happy to compensate - though that did NOT happen during my rental on the terribly maintained equipment (one ATV would not even go in reverse and I had to drag it back on the trail each time reverse was needed!) The owner accused me of a collision (which did not happen) and demanded to look through my personal photos - which I denied. I then requested the owners name which he refused to provide. Overall the setup is a little strange as the owner normally resides in FL and expects to operate the place remote. If there is a better option for the area or a different place to rent ATVs-I would suggest that to avoid the hassle and potential argument. The owner claims to be very meticulous about his machinery but I gather a little paranoid/or in a tough spot financially to cause such strange outbursts. I did have a great time off-road for the first time but would never put myself in the situation to deal with the overall shady operation at American Oak Resort LLC again (owners name is Arthur W Jensen though he tries to hide his identity for some reason!)

No wi-fi, no TV, no phone, no in room coffee, no cups, no ice. No one at desk during the night. Routy guests not dealt with, one slept on the couch in the lobby. You get a uncomfortable bed and a bathroom. Can't check in early as doors are locked until 3:00 p.m.
