7 Hostels hotel in Virginia: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 19, 2023 Terina Blouin

Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

Great place to stay for a night?

Allison is a very welcoming guest. Her place has all the charm of a small town, but she goes out of her way to make you sure you are comfortable and rested, so you can enjoy Luray and all it has to offer. I've been in hostels before, but I can say even if you haven't, Allison's place really gives you a good idea of all the good aspects of being in one. Highly recommend!

Bear's Den Hostel

Alert: Unsafe space for women.

Reviewed By 674es

I was not impressed with my experience at the Bear's Den. I can forgive the grit and grime, the fruit flies in the kitchen, and some of the chaos, but the lack of comfort and safety was unacceptable. I came as part of a group who stayed in the hostel for several days. I was under the impression that we would have the hostel to ourselves, which was not the case. There was a constant stream of people (and dogs) coming through. We had to share the tiny kitchen while attempting to prepare food for 15 people. At one point there were three dogs running around, barking loudly, and stealing the food we were serving. On another night, campers outside were shouting the F-word at each other, making it difficult to sleep. It sounded like two volatile men preparing to fight. The owner, Glenn, invited his male buddies over almost every night. Despite the "No Alcohol" sign outside, they brought cases of beer. One of his friends offered to give me a back massage. I said no. He apparently didn't understand what no meant, and asked two more times. I had to physically move away from him. This same man did things that made other people from our group uncomfortable as well. I don't think it's appropriate for a hostel owner to invite people over that harass the guests. I did not feel safe or comfortable here.

a nice place for the hikers to stay

Stayed at crazy Larry for one night. A bed and breakfast for only $40 can't be better. First day, had long and fruitful conversation with Larry over different subjects including the history of hostels. Well he knew almost every hostel "managers" that I asked him about. The bed was comfortable and he was very helpful suggesting resupply and restaurants around the town. One of the best part of this hostel is that the people bring all sort of foods, cadies, ... for the hikers and leave it in the front area of the hostel, free of charge but would be nice if you could pitch in a few dollars to help supplying more for the next hikers. In the morning, had to leave early and did not have the chance to taste his breakfast but for sure it was smelling very good. If you stay there, ask Larry about his interview with NPR, very interesting story to hear, as well as his run for the city council. I am sure you will enjoy staying at Crazy Larry :) :) :)

Mt Rogers Outfitters Hostel

Weary hikers rejoice!

Reviewed By smithnewland

As someone who's already done a thru hike (Me. to Ga. '05), I'm glad that some things haven't changed. I have returned to Damascus several times since then, and always chose a time when I was sure the hostel wouldn't be needed by thru-hikers. I was sorry to hear the founder (Dave) had passed away, but his sons (and their sons) have carried on. The hostel is right across the street from their outfitter store, and, as hostels go, is one of the best (as a former thru-hiker I should know). Each room comes with its own key so your gear is safe while exploring the town, and each bunk already has a pad on it. There are even two double rooms for couples. Other amenities are unpredictable - there has been a coffeemaker and microwave, and the rotating collection of books expands or collapses in size depending on who has come through to take or deposit. The central location in town makes it a short walk to get a bite to eat and check out "the friendliest town on the trail." The outfitter provides shuttles, and a wealth of information about all the available trails, as you could easily spend a couple weeks checking them all out (the Iron Mountain trail used to be the AT, and is worth checking out, and there are connector trails that offer several loop possibilities). Happy hiking!

Last Minute Booking - Very Impressed

Reviewed By VaBeachLocal

This has to be one of the nicest hostels one could ever stay at. Super clean, nice common areas (and kitchen), great staff and great location. There are a lot of "little" touches that you wouldn't expect at a hostel. Things like a light free breakfast, USB chargers build into the bunk bed headboard, towels for the floor mats in the shower. Soap/Shampoo provided. Immaculate cleanliness. Staff willing to help in any way they can! Shout-out to Anna who helped me on the phone and in-person. She is wonderful. The beds themselves are actually some of the best I have ever slept on while traveling and this includes hotel chains. Nice sheets, comfortable pillows. I would stay here again in a second (and probably will) and will tell others, as well.

The Hostile Hostel

Reviewed By Traveler0320

The bunkouse us a three-car garage that smells like vomit. It's filled with mildewed furniture, and there's a singke bathroom for all the guests, no matter how many guests they take in (there were about 20 when I stayed). The shower area us filthy. The real problem is that the proprietor is just a hard person to deal with. I escaped his wrath, but I saw him cussing out more than one guest. The owner runs this hostel on donations, but you would honestly be better off tenting nearby (several spots near the Newport Road crossing, VA 624) or pressing on into the town of Catawba.
