The Witmarsum Colony is a true time travel just 60 kilometers from Curitiba. The Germanic traits in the architecture and customs of this small community make the visitor feel in Europe. Located in the municipality of Palmeira, it was formed by Mennonites, a group of German-Russians, who have their origin in Friesland, in the north of Netherlands and Germany. Through Prussia they immigrated to Russia in the eighteenth century, from which, in 1929, they fled the communist regime. In 1930 they came to Brazil where, after a time in Santa Catarina, founded in 1951 the Colony in Paraná. With hard work they prospered socially and economically with the production of milk and grains, which from the early years until today are delivered to the Cooperative Witmarsum, which benefits the milk and produces the Witmarsum Fine Cheeses. Tourism has been growing considerably since 2003, with a museum, cafes, restaurants, inns, handicrafts, breweries and horse riding.
