The Netherlands are famous for its wooden shoes, and deservedly so: back in 1800, almost everybody owned a pair (or two). Nowadays only around 200.000 Dutchmen and Dutchwomen wear them daily. Their clogs are no longer handmade, machines have taken over. The production process is a bit like making a spare key: the machine traces the outlines of a clog mould and then carves away the excess wood in a fresh block of poplar. In the Wooden shoe factory you can see how this is done. A movie shows you the old manufacturing process and at regular times, the clog maker is there, in his workshop. Wooden shoes are also part of the traditional Volendam costume. In a small exhibit we explain the dress and its many different layers. The workshop is situated on the second floor of the Wooden shoe factory. Free entry!
Good place to learn how Wooden Shoes and Cheese are made. Great place to take picturesque photos of the Windmills and the river in the background

The small fisherman village Volendam has hosted one of the most tasty Dutch attractions - the Cheese Factory. It will give a unique insight into the process of producing the famous Dutch cheese, a pride of the Netherlands!
We spent a lovely afternoon wandering around Volendam and decided to pop inside the cheese factory. We were very impressed with the presentation and purchased some WONDERFUL cheeses to enjoy on our trip. We will definitely order more from this place. Yum!

The Alida Hoeve cheese farm and wooden shoe factory is located in Volendam. Where once cows grazed, now stands a shop with cheese for sale. Visitors are welcomed by staff wearing traditional Volendam dress and are all provided with an explanation on the preparation of cheese and the production of wooden shoes. Free entrance, demonstrations, tasting and parking.

Don't let photos of crowds put you off (as nearly happened to me) about Volendam. While the shops along the waterfront (not very long, only a few blocks) obviously cater to tourists there are nice restaurants and gorgeous vistas along the shore and into the town itself.
