If you have time enough to make a detour and wait a few minutes for the ferry, it is the most beautiful and comfortable way to cross the river Rhein. And it gives you a different perspective to see Basel.

Am 19. Mai 1864 gegründet, befährt die Schifffahrtsges. Untersee und Rhein heute die Strecke zwischen Kreuzlingen/Konstanz und Schaffhausen.
This is a PERFECT day trip from Zurich. I took the train from Zurich to Konstanz, enjoyed a coffee and a brief walk around downtown, did a little shopping (got some cute, felted house slippers that are great here in Alaska), watched Imperia circle around for awhile at the harbor entrance and then caught this cruise, which included a wonderful lunch. They stopped a couple times letting people on and off and it was exciting going under the low bridge. Lunch was delicious! The German's definitely invented "comfort food"! It was a cold, rainy autumn day and that macaroni and cheese over potatoes with crushed fried onions on top really hit the spot! The fall colors were as beautiful as I had hoped they would be, despite the gloomy weather. I got off at Schaffhausen and caught the train back to Zurich. I wish I had planned for more time to see more of Schaffhausen, but it was getting late and I had trouble finding the train station, so I was sort of racing around town in a bit of a panic. I should have followed everyone else who got off the boat, rather than setting off in my own direction. One of the cruise employees had kindly advised me to sit on the LEFT side of the train back to Zurich, so I would get an awesome view of the Rheinfall (waterfall). All-in-all a perfect day! I encourage you to do this in early October, because there are fewer tourists and the weather's not too bad yet.

CGN offers many possibilities to relax on the lake for the pleasure of your eyes and of your taste buds due to a high quality of gastronomy. For an hour or a whole day you will sail in the most beautiful lemanic landscapes discovering the vineyards of Lavaux, the Chillon castle, the Alps and the Mont-Blanc, the fabulous medieval town of Yvoire and the famous water fountain of Geneva.

We have just moved to this part of Switzerland and I thought it might be useful to someone to see some English language reviews of local attractions. The Horgen-Meilen ferry is not officially tourist attraction and more just an “ordinary” means of public transport. However, for visitors it’s definitely an enjoyable thing to do and a practical, inexpensive way to get to the other side of the lake. Simply walk or drive onto the ferry and the helpful staff direct you where to go. They will then come round during the journey to take payment, which is only CHF1.50 each way. The view and the refreshing lake breeze on the ferry ride is lovely, and both towns on either side, Horgen and Meilen, are nice places to visit. There are places to sit and enjoy the view with a coffee or ice cream on both sides. It’s not a full day out as it only takes a few minutes but as a means of transport it is certainly more of a novelty than driving or catching a train! There is also a nice playpark for children at the ferry port on the Horgen side.

Motherlanguage is french but I will drop an advice in English for travellers : it was our second trip on the “Savoie” boat for dinner departure 7PM back in GVA at 10PM with some stop in Versoix, and Yvoire. We where using mask, tables with more space, just have to wear mask when not seated, staff wear a mask It was saturday and weather was little bit cold (September 5), si not that full, then we enjoyed a perfect service by our very young, efficient and full of knowledge waiter ( about wine and food that he will serve). Last year the waitress has no skills at all : just drop the plate, and it was not covid period. We choosed the CHF 82.- menu with some beverage and the Gamay from “Cave de Genève”. Red wine, light and fair price for the whole meal (foie gras, noix de St-Jaques, beef...) as we are not friend with white wine. Perfect match (dear english travellers : forget Chardonnay or other kinf of famous wine, here you should thrust Chasselas, Gamay or Gamaret. No need of Bordeaux. Wester swiss wine are excellent if you give a try.) I read some comment about covid and mask : yes even in groceries some people dont repsect rules. Protect yourself ans stay away from them. Cough in your arm and you will maybe see them catch their mask back Anyway even if there is no “blabla” speaking like tourguide, GPS and mobile network are avaiable mostly during the whole trip, use your usual app to get informations. Dont miss to have a look to the perfectly lubricate engines back from the last decade and dont forget that the price you paid (plus lots of support from governement and private people) will help to maintain this incredible fleet on the lake. Swiss engeneering as its best, and we like to keep it alive. Enjoy the view and feel lucky to be onboard a boat that is still floating and superb even 100 year later. Dont forget that when you book a table you can access dining room upstairs with a second class ticket, as long as you eat. If no, 1st class is needed for upper deck.
