The Image Museum is a cultural space in Braga dedicated to Photography. Braga’s municipality has the guardianship of the museum, which opened its doors on April 25, 1999. It is located in Campo das Hortas, next to Arco da Porta Nova, on a building restored by Architect Sergio Borges and that hides a building from the XIX century and a tower of the XIV century, part of the town’s old Medieval Wall. At Alberto Sampaio Museum everything combines to leave the visitor wanting to return here. We get thrilled without knowing why. What is certain is that visitors feel serenity and left enchanted by the beauty of the set. This is the only national museum that opens its doors during the night, in the months of July and August. Visit this "museum at night" is an experience you will never forget. This museum certainly deserves, "all visits and visitors makes swears to come back here every time we're in Guimaraes" (Jose Saramago). Want to try?
It all began with the legendary and extremely wealthy Countess Mumadona Dias, ruler of the Counties of "Portucale" and "Coimbra" in the 10th century, when she commissioned the construction of a monastery - the "Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Guimarães". Later, in the 12th century, the primitive monastery was pretty much enlarged and became known as "Igreja Colegiada de Santa Maria da Oliveira de Guimarães". All these constructions, after many additions and restorations, were adapted to house, in the 20th century, a museum of religious art - the "Museu de Alberto Sampaio", at the heart of the historic center of Guimarães. If time is not a constraint and religious art stands among your interests, the museum has nice collections of sculptures, statues, paintings, engravings, tiles, religious objects and so on! But, anyway, the ancient church and cloisters deserve a visit! Enjoy!
