7 Architectural Buildings in Canton of Valais That You Shouldn't Miss

January 20, 2022 Tynisha Seiler

At the foot of the Swiss Alps lies Valais, "the valley." This fabled region is a year-round favorite, with spectacular skiing in the winter and superb hiking in summer. The Matterhorn, the Great St. Bernard Pass and Zermatt are the stars of the area, but glaciers, lakes, mountain paths, castle-churches and a wealth of resorts also beckon. Visit L'Hospice du Grand St. Bernard to see the animals who helped the monks rescue travelers or the Fondation Pierre Gianadda, Roman ruins that now house modern art.

Full disclosure: I am a food tourist. While some people look for great museums when they travel, I look for great food at great museums. Not only is this a really interesting destination for people who appreciate learning about nature and history, it's also a great place (perhaps the best in the Aletsch Arena area) to go for cake and coffee. The cakes are fine, high-quality, German-style confections: well-made, delicious, unusual and locally sourced--not your typical "tea room" selection. They have a great selection of teas, the coffee is great, even the list of "syrups" (for kids) was unusual and locally inspired (mountain flowers, etc.). And then there's the service! At least two of the waitresses were fluent in German, Swiss German, French and English and they were the friendliest people this side of the Alps. We went back twice... the perfect destination for a nice morning hike. The only issue we had (and there was a small one) is that, the second time we went there, we arrived at around 12:30, which was apparently lunchtime for the employees, so it took about 40 minutes to flag down a waitress (we were sitting outside, where most people sit when it's gorgeous out). Normally, that would make me rather angry, but in this case, it gave us a chance to eat the picnic lunch we had packed for our hike. And when the waitress finally arrived, she was apologetic and as friendly as the previous time, even going so far as to not charge for our daughter's drink. Well worth the pleasant walk up the mountain.
