6 Wineries & Vineyards in Rhodes That You Shouldn't Miss

December 12, 2021 Darleen Reid

The largest of the twelve Dodecanese islands on the Aegean's eastern edge, Rhodes is also its most popular. The well-preserved medieval city of Rhodes sits at the north of the island of the same name. High rise hotels line the northern and eastern coastlines. Small villages and resorts dot the island's other shores. Whether your interests are beaches, bars or ancient sites, Rhodes offers an abundance of all three. Authentic Greece can be found in the hilly interior of the 50-mile-long island.

Emery Winery

The island of the Aegean Sea where the art of viniculture and wine making developed for the first time during the ancient years. Athiri, Moschato, Amoriano… Delicious varieties of the Rhodian soil fermented in the mild microclimate on the island’s highest Mountain Attaviros. Ideal for the production of wine of character and quality. While the precious winery secrets, reaching far back to the years of the Rhodian Knights gently intermingle with the Mediterranean’s fervor and saltiness, Oinotheque Emery consigns values unchangeable over time. Since 1923, when Oinotheque Emery was created, the grape’s cultivation procedure, the must process and the vinification methods have evolved in many ways. The respect for quality, tradition and values have remained constant and have led the way to the third generation of the Triantafillou family, opening tasty pursuits and new horizons. The village of Embonas is where you’ll find the Emery Winery, one of the oldest and largest wineries in Greece.

Lovely ride up to the winery by motorcycle from Rhodes town through some lovely villages. We sampled a good range of their wines and liked them all. It was difficult to deide as we were limited by what the motorbike could store. Finally decided on a wine, but we hope to return to stock up with more of their wines.

We visit Embonas every time we travel to Rhodes (3 x 2020) and I must say I always enjoy the wine tasting experience at Alexandris Winery. The shop now just further through the village has a great display of wines on the shelves and Despoina has been a great host for us when we have sampled the wines there. The brothers work very hard to produce such nice wine and have also been great hosts on our visits in the past. I always purchse different wines but my wife and family love the medium sweet wines whether red or white and their semi sparkling Rose is also very pleasant. Don't just take my word for it take a trip to Embonas and sample the wines here I'm sure you will not be disappointed.
