My parents were evacuated from Guernsey at the start of the WWII so I grew up hearing many stories of life as an evacuee. My husbands parents stayed on the Island during the occupation, and they passed on many stories to me of Island life then.

Besides little change in St Peter Port, except for the shops, the Medieval Church and Castle are a rare glimpse into a bygone age. The flowers along the way, in season, are a joy to see. The firing of the noon day gun in Castle Cornet by keepers in their Militia uniform, is a great opportunity for a photograph along with views of St Peter Port.

Jan’s tour was well planned with many enlarged photos so we could see the places we were standing in, as they were during the war. The St Peters Port route gave attention to places mentioned in Potato Peel Pie, but put them in the wider context of Guernsey history. She drew on her own family history with photographs which showed the impact of world events on the individual. As an aside, as we walked she drew attention to other historical buildings. We were a large group of 16 but kept together well. Jan used a microphone so could be heard clearly at all times. She was highly organised and full of local knowledge.
