Lovely hotel in a fabulous village!

Reviewed By DoglawyerATX

One of our favorite hotels of our trip around Scotland (and we went from here to the Waldorf in Edinburgh, so stiff competition). The room was nicely done, the shower had plentiful hot water, the breakfast was fabulous and quick and the location in this adorable town can’t be beat. But the staff and owner are what really make this place special. The parking lot was full when we arrived and the town was jam packed. As we were standing in the lot trying to think of where to park, a woman approached us and when we explained our problem she offered to open a gate to a little yard next to the lot for us to park. She said to just close the gate after we left, no worries. We were calling her the parking angel, because she just appeared out of nowhere and fixed the problem. We found out later she owned the hotel! Completely unassuming and eager to help. She was always out working during our stay at the hotel. You can tell why everything is so well run. We enjoyed drinks by the riverside terrace and the service there was equally great. Everyone was running around cleaning tables and making sure that you had a comfy seat and anything else you needed. It was a very busy day in Dunkeld, but having a drink on this terrace made it seem like a quiet retreat. We also discovered that the hotel is very dog friendly. They charge a small pet fee and that fee goes to a charity benefiting animals. And the walls are lined with pet photos. We love our pets and miss them when we travel abroad, but we also don’t normally stay at pet friendly hotels as I am very allergic to dogs. I manage this easily at home by keeping them off of furniture, out of bedrooms and keeping things very clean. I don’t want to stay in a bed that someone’s dog has slept on. But if they hadn’t told me this hotel was pet friendly, I wouldn’t have guessed. Our room was spotless and I had no allergy issues while I was there. Perhaps pets are not allowed in all rooms, but even in the common areas, I never saw a piece of dog hair on furniture. Getting to love on other guest’s pets while I was so far away from my own just made this place that much more special.

Wonderful stay

Wonderful stay in a fabulous location. The pods are really comfortable with mattresses, heaters and lights included. The utility is well equipped with a large fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster and both it and the shower facilities were spotless. The owners were great - very welcoming and gave great advice on local activities. My friend and I stayed with our kids and they had an absolute ball. There is a fire pit and an area of grass perfect for football. The location couldn't be better - the hill behind the pods are great for a scramble and loads of walks are available direct from the site, while Dunkeld is just a few minutes drive away. We'll definitely be back.

The best time I had in Scotland

Dunkeld is one of the most picturesque places I have ever been to. Although not big, more like a village than a town, the feel of coziness and familiarity cannot elude the weary traveler. Staying at the Tay House was the most exquisite experience in a place where history and wild nature are interwoven in such a beautiful way. Clean and cozy, with sparkly clean rooms, the bathroom spotless, with walk-in shower, bright white towels, walk-in closet, beautiful smell and complimentary toiletries, all made our stay so comfortable and relaxing! The staff are kind and respectful, so helping and smiling all the time, so friendly that you cannot help wondering if you've met them before. You could not find a better place to stay. I will definitely be back. Thank you!

What a find!! Definitely returning. A man playing a guitar & singing attracted us to sit in the fabulous beer garden. The place was packed!! The lager was so good & staff very friendly. The main hotel is where the toilets are located & the restaurants looked very nice. Lots of snacks on offer in the beer garden such as pizza, flatbreads & scampi.

Has potential to be one of the world's great hotels

Stunning setting and parkland, well-proportioned and well laid out hotel. Good sized rooms. The hotel is 95% there. It is the missing 5% that lets it down. Hard mattresses, no mini fridges in rooms let alone mini bars, good food in the dining room but inconsistent - for every two good dishes the third is poor/not as described/cold. The staff struggle to take ownership of issues in their own right, the computer systems they use do not appear fully integrated etc. Get the above right and you have a truly great hotel. Genuinely.

We stayed here as two couples on 27 May 2022 for bed breakfast dinner and a tribute night. I had booked two double rooms but the confirmation email stated it would be in the annexe. I emailed the hotel to say I wanted two double rooms in the hotel. No reply. I have stayed in this hotel before so recommended it to my family. When checking in we were told it was the annexe we were staying in and I said I wasn’t too happy about this as I had recommended the hotel to family with whom I was travelling. I was assured the annexe rooms were the same as the hotel rooms. They most definitely are not. The rooms were small, dated and not very clean. No hot water in the morning and no Wi-Fi. Trying to make the best of our trip we headed to the function room for dinner. The function suite was lovely however the meal was terrible. The soup was cold and tasteless the chicken was over cooked and tasteless and the veg was undercooked. The pudding was ok. It’s the worst meal I have ever been served. The bar in the function room couldn’t serve pints as we were told the pipes hadn’t been cleaned. So they had to be brought up from the downstairs bar. Saving Grace from this trip was the tribute act. It was really good. Front of house staff are doing their best under difficult circumstances. When checking out I told staff member of above and I felt really bad for her as it seems to be down to staff shortages and mismanagement. I emailed the hotel on 31 May 2022. Didn’t receive a reply so felt I had to put this on trip advisor. I very rarely leave negative reviews but this trip had too many negatives to ignore.
