Rio Chirripo in San Gerardo Costa Rica is one of the best-loved destinations and nature lodges. Here you can enjoy yoga, meditation, hiking, birdwatching, or pure relaxation. Let the spectacular natural surroundings of our beautiful retreat and Chirripo area rejuvenate body and soul. Our selection of rooms and cabins with private bathrooms are complemented by inviting communal areas and trails, as well as a free form riverside swimming pool and hot tub. Practice yoga in our magnificent space with a view of tropical forest and lush green hillside. We take pride in our home-grown organic vegetables lovingly propagated by our extended family community, which we carefully use in our consciously prepared meals. Rio Chirripo Yoga Retreat and Hotel are located four hours from International airport Juan Santa Maria in San Jose, Costa Rica and a few minutes drive away from the village of San Gerardo de Rivas, base camp for hikers and climbers who have their sights set on the peak of Cerro Chirripo, the highest mountain in Costa Rica. Besides Chirripo National Park, the Chirripo Valley is also the gateway to the cloud forest, with its waterfalls and hot springs, its breathtaking range of birdlife, butterflies, and orchids. We also help the traveler experience Costa Rica in its essence. We offer packages that allow our visitors to explore Chirripo’s picturesque rural villages and their people as well as honeymoon packages in the rainforest and of course our great yoga packages. Whether you’re an independent traveler looking for a unique hotel or part of a group trying to retreat from the pressures of a busy world, Rio Chirripo Yoga Retreat is a place where you will find harmony, positive energy, and a universal welcome.
We had our flight changed by one day departing and returning due to weather and tings were thrown into complete chaos, so I had to contact the hotel because the useless Expedia people could not get their act together. Fortunately for us, the lovely Stefannie answered the phone and she reassured us that all would be well and that the hotel would do everything in their power to take care of the situation. I am not a very trusting person when it comes to travel promises, but boy was I impressed with this young lady. Stefannie simply went to work with her manager and contacted us a couple of days later to reassure us that our reservation had been adjusted accordingly, get this, at no extra charge. Have you heard of that one before? I haven't. Then we get to the place and it is completely unexpected in the most awesome of ways. Beautiful scenery, lovely temperature, gorgeous gardens, and the facilities are to die for in a somewhat spartan way that makes you realize that when you are in setting like this, you don't need phones, computers, TVs, etc. Nothing but a good book. We get assigned the river cabin overlooking a thunderous waterfall that will lull you to sleep at night. The terrace if wonderful for birdwatching (over 20 new species added to my life list from the hotel grounds alone), Roger the bartender makes a Mojito that is to die for, but the biggest surprise of all is the food. The meals are $36.00 U.S. Dollars if memory serves me well, but when you make the reservations the hotel fails to tell you that it is not just a meal, it is a four course food experience, which along with the fabulous, and I mean fabulous (you can tell I liked this place) breakfast makes you wonder, how come you have just discovered this place. During one of the days we had a birding tour planned that would require us to leave before breakfast, so Stefannie and the crew surprised us after dinner with brown bag breakfast packages to carry with us (a delicious cheese sandwich, peanut/butter, fresh fruit, juice boxes, etc.) during our tour. Just thoughtful. We didn't even have to ask. Our experience was heavenly and the service is some of the best we ever had, only second to Viking Cruises' service, which is saying a lot. All the staff, but particularly Roger, Maria, Marcus, and most of all the gem that is Steffanie, along with the fantastic views of the river, the wonderful pool and hot tubs (2), and amazing wildlife make this place the reason why we are already looking at availability for next year. We were so turned off by our experience with the heat, the humidity, the hordes of tourists and hordes of aggressive hawkers in Manuel Antonio, that we swore on the way to Rio Chirripo that we would never go back to Costa Rica. But after our stay here, we are already looking at dates for our return to the mountains to Rio Chirripo. Sometimes you just get lucky and find that spot that makes you happy, this is definitely ours.

Good hotel with decent priced rooms and space for backpackers to spread out. Decent no frills backpacker kitchen fare. No ac but no need for it at this altitude. Kitchens in room so can cook if feeling like it The road to get here is a little rough but doable. Closest location to start of Cerro Chirripo trail which of course is the main reason to stay. They have rooms higher up on a back trail with an amazing manicured yard and flowers and a mountain raising up in the background. I would ask for one of those rooms ( on the trail above Mariposa lodge which is next door )

Luckily, we stayed here only one night! We looked for a hotel near the Cloudbridge Reserve and due to the fantastic reviews on Google and TripAdvisor we booked the Talamanca Nature Reserve. Right after the check-in we were charged almost 180 USD for one night in a garden cabin. They only post the prices without tax on their website: 150 USD for a garden cabin. As a tourist I do not care about the price without tax, I only care about the final price. But of course, this tactic gets them more clients. What did we get for 180 USD / night? Definitely not breakfast, because it was not included. We got a very basic and small cabin with two beds 140x200 cm, a toilet and a small shower. Our bed was uncomfortable, we needed to wait a long time until the water got hot in the bate and the shower was only slowly drizzling. Yes, you read it correctly, we paid for all that more than we did in the Hilton Gran Hotel in San José. And in the Gran Hotel we also had breakfast included. We were considering getting dinner at the hotel and took a look at the menu. One of the cheapest items was "chicken breast" which started at 25 USD. Of course, tax and the service tip is not included, so you would pay for chicken breast 31 USD. They also had fish and steak for much higher prices. Who do they think they are? A 3 star Michelin restaurant? Given the options, we went out to a restaurant 3 km down the road and paid 20 USD for two appetizers and two main dishes. The food was very good! Instead of investing in the cabins, they invested the money in fancy doors at the entrance. Nicely done! As a tip: You have a lot of hotels in the area which costs around 60 / night and offer you just about the same standards as the Talamanca Nature Reserve. This hotel is vastly overpriced and definitely not worth it. If they would have charged 50 USD / night, I would have given them three stars. But for 180 USD / night, it's more like zero stars on my behalf. If you want to do the hikes in the Cloudbridge Reserve or in the Chirrito National Park, it makes more sense to book something around Hotel Uran.

Beautiful guesthouse in the heart of the cloud forest, just steps from Chirripó national park entrance. There is a beautiful waterfall in their jungle backyard with lots of places to sit and watch the birds fly through the lush vegetation. The rooms have tons of character, with lots of common area outside the rooms to hang out. The hosts are very welcoming and accommodating, and let us use the showers after finishing the Cerro Chirripó hike. Shared kitchen for making your own meals, with coffee and tea provided. If you want to eat out, there is a restaurant right next door at Hotel Uran. Would definitely recommend this place!
