This is a budget option and during my 2-night stay I got exactly what I paid for. The room and bathroom were fairly clean although the building in general looks very aged and exhausted. I visited this hotel as my parents booked it by a relative's recommendation. I was initially reluctant to stay after I saw the pictures and previous reviews. My parents (who live in Venezuela) insisted on this one even though I offered to pay somewhere else higher rated. For us living abroad the current Venezuela exchange market allow us to stay in very fancy hotels for ridiculously low prices. Unfortunately the first night complied to my low expectations. The room I was given has some flaws such as the toilet not flushing, an extremely noisy and old air conditioning unit and the shower recess had a column that made superbly difficult to use it comfortably. I complained the morning after and got successfully changed rooms. Besides keep insisting my parents to change hotels but they were still thinking otherwise. I was given a different room in the 2nd level and it was better in terms of the things I complained about. However this room it was far from the wifi antenna and had no internet connection whatsoever. I finally gave up fighting my old ones and stayed in the hotel. The room was very simple with a fridge and key lock (no swipe card). The TV was a very small flat screen with a very bad image quality. The day-time front desk staff was very friendly and attended my requirement in a timely and diligent manner. However the night-time staff wasn't very friendly and regularly spoke us with a challenging tone of voice. I later understood that this is normal and acceptable in Venezuela now. Being abroad for so long made you get unused to this kind of things. To wrap it up: this hotel will give you exactly what you will expect for $20/night fare. A bed to spend a night and a bathroom to use afterwards. As a bonus: the room will be clean and you won't be sleeping on dirty linens. If you're budget driven and need only spend the night then this hotel is for you.

I only made this reservation because I couldn't ask my couchsurfing host for a notarized invitation, and I need a hotel reservation, notarized letter, or return plane ticket to enter venezuela (I arrived on motorcycle). This posada is in a pretty dangerous part of town, and that's saying a lot for maracaibo. They have a very secure parking lot for your vehicle, no matter the size. The rooms are great, the service is great except that they lock you in with a shutter at night and the night person stays in a shed across the parking lot. You have to call her if you want to get out after 10pm. The rooms have wifi and a/c and cable tv, and everything works great (except the water after 10am in the dry season). If you book online, the man will immediately tell you that the credit card you provided isn't valid and then ask you to pay in cash (US). This is because US cash is pretty much gold in venezuela. If you object, he'll offer you a deal: you pay some super high amount of Bolivars and then a "commission" to the booking website in dollars, that he will make with his own credit card. If you ask about the commission, he'll say "five, six, seven dollars..." and then shrug. He can turn 5 dollars into 350 Bolivars (55 USD) if he changes it on the black market. I really didn't like the feeling that he was forcing me to pay in foreign currency, but I had no other choice because it was already quite late, and I was prepared to pay the money on my credit card anyways. I was really more annoyed that I had to give my precious cash to him. Feel free to skip out on your reservation, because your credit card isn't valid at the Posada Oleary.
