Vinalhaven Historical Society

The society has pictures of Vinalhaven and exhibits about its granite industry from 1880-1910.

Reviewed By fallowtreveler - Berkshires, Massachusetts

A truly wonderful variety of exhibits chronicling the island's history from its earliest farmers and sea captains, through its heyday as a granite quarrying center, it's brief turn as a spa location where folks came to "take the waters," and it's more recent life as a summer home for artists and academics. Well run and a testimony to its curators, Roy Heisler and Bill Chilles.

It is not a walk in the park nor is it meant to be but on a sunny day the walk is memorable and rewarding.

Basin Preserve

Reviewed By Bakerz - North Carolina

"Lose yourself" on the meandering hiking trails that will lead you to the well-known Seal Basin. The Vinalhaven Land Trust has done a masterful job clearing and mapping trails to ultimately lead one to multiple opportunities to view seals sunning on rocks. Low tide is the best time to come; seals will be more likely to show themselves during the low tides. Also, there is a sandy trail that allows hikers to cross over to a small island for a better view. This path is only visible during low tides and will be completely submerged during high tide. Be sure to bring binoculars. This is a moderately easy hike but there are many tree roots that could be treacherous. Such a beautiful , traqnquil spot!!
