« Wow ! It’s a Nogent! » said Roubaud in the film « La bête humaine », directed by Jean Renoir in 1938. The city of Nogent and its surrounding region have been producing cutlery of outstanding quality since the 17th century. As Roubeau observed, the mere mention of the word « Nogent » evokes the quality of the product. The Cutlery Museum in Nogent is proud to present, in a modern setting, the history of the traditional methods of production of this fine cutlery. The exhibition shows a fine collection of highly decorative knives and scissors which demonstrate the artistic excellence of the Nogent craftsman. In the Museum a traditional home workshop demonstrates the social and material conditions in which this craftsmanship was developed and maintained. We also present newer technologies of production, the result of the evolution of traditional savoir-faire to expanding market opportunities (prosthetic implants, surgical instruments, etc.).
