Kokopelli

Reviewed By molbee - Ann Arbor, Michigan

An unbelievable experience. Jeremiah the captain and Kenner the guide were fantastic. We saw a croc, boa constrictor, howler monkeys and many birds. Also saw a group of capuchins attack and devour a squirrel monkey. Totally worth the money.

El Sitio Museo Finca 6

Reviewed By Gene J - Silver Spring, Maryland

This morning at 8AM, we drove a rental car from our El Teca Hotel. Google maps worked perfectly along the 8km paved road through Palmar Sur, passing the airport, then zig zagging to the archeological site. Their 400m dirt/stone road crossed a steel grid bridge then passed through a banana grove to the new elevated museum.
After registering(paid $6 each), we entered several halls with detailed exhibits in Spanish/English explaining the area's human habitation back to the Archaic Period (10,000 BC-1,500 BC), passing from hunter-gatherer to agriculture to tribal, then a complex hierarchical society with competing chiefdom's.
Outside, we followed marked trails to mounded living sites(one fronted with a sphere), then a few aligned "in sito" spheres(celestial importance), and farther to an impressive 8 sphere clearing. Posing for photos, we noticed the rustling trees and spotted a family of elusive Central American Squirrel Monkeys.
This site is crossed by a long steel framework, a relic from the old United Fruit Banana Company, that moved field product via gondola. We passed their old management housing returning to town, but noted most of the area's banana groves have been replaced with palm oil plantations. We also discovered many more stone spheres; 6 at a road junction, 10 in the Palmar Sur Park, and 2 beside an old train display. These are just part of the 300 spheres known to exist and likely carved between 300 BC and 1,500 AD.

We did the 3 hour mangrove tour. Our guide was excellent.
We saw too much to list here, but we did see birds, snakes, iguanas, monkeys, turtles, crocks and even a raccoon.
Very informative, very relaxing. Excellent way to see the animals in their natural habitat.

I had exchanged e-mails with Enoc Espinoza in person to book a tour to Corcovado with Sierpe Azul based on the positive comments posted on this site. The day before departure on the full-day tour we received an e-mail with instructions to be at Oleaje Sereno Restaurant and to ask for a particular person who first booked us on a Cano Island tour before putting us on the day's tour to Corcovado with another company without explanation. Are all Cocovado tour companies interchangeable? Did we not specifically book a tour with Enoc Espinoza from Sierpe Azul? The tour went well but we're pretty sure we never saw Enoc Espinoza or travelled on a Sierpe Azul boat.

We had a great experience with Sierpe Outfitters and, in particular, Rayna Levin. Rayna planned a trip for us to Sirena, where we stalked a puma all day, and I was even pooped on my an endangered squirrel monkey!
Not surprisingly, Sierpe Outfitters was professional, perfect, and everything went as smoothly as possible. They even allowed us to book very last minute, and were able to put together a full package for us with only hours of notice.
What is more, Rayna (who is an American expat living in Costa Rica, and a veritable Fountain of information about all things Costa Rica) went above and beyond by being on call to answer any questions we had, providing us with additional information about other legs of our journey, and just generally being amazing.
Just for example, we were trying to decide whether to drive down to Puerto Jimenez and beyond (the very southern tip of Costa Rica) and asked maybe 6-7 different people how long that drive would take from Sierpe. We got answers ranging from 1.5 hours to 6 hours, and there was literally no consistency. Finally we asked Rayna. She gave a very informative answer, including how long it would take after Puerto Jimenez on the dirt roads. And when we did the drive, she was spot on! Just an example of why it's really helpful to be able to work with people who know their stuff.
Thanks again!
